Our prayers are with John's family. John was, quite simply, one of the finest people to have ever walked the earth. He shared so generously with all of us - his time, wisdom, sense of humor, and attention. I learned something important from him when I interviewed with him in 1979 - that figuring out the question is more important than figuring out the answer. I learned something important from him when I showed up on my first day at work at 6:30 am and he was on his hands and knees with a bucket and brush scrubbing the entry tile - work ethic and humility. I learned something from him when he invited me to join him and Marjorie for Thanksgiving dinner my first year in Alaska, and then took me out to his garage and built a wooden crate for a piece of art I was taking outside to family at Christmas - caring about others and always being willing to help. I've never met anyone with more cause to have a big ego for all he had accomplished in life, but I've never met anyone who had less ego. John was, remains, and for the rest of my life will be continue to be a role model.

Deepest sympathy to the Hughes family. It was a privilege to visit with John (and often Mary) in Horizon House and bring him communion.

John Hughes was truly a wonderful man. He often joked with me about "Being from the Dakotas" just like him. I was so honored that he picked my Better than Sex cake as the winner at one of the HTGP&B annual summer picnics. I fondly remember him at Mass at Holy Family with my boys when there were growing up. He always had some very wise advice for them. My sincere condolences to the entire family.

Mary,
Your father was very special to many people, including me. His love and devotion to your mother reminded me of my own parents. He was kind to invite me and my bride for Thanksgiving at his home in 1973. For years after he retired, he stayed in touch with the firm, and knew the names of everyone there, including the secretaries, the spouses, and the children. I still have one of the cast ram heads he made from the nameplates of attorneys who left the firm. I enjoyed his mandatory weekly young lawyer training sessions, and his potatoes, and the fact that he would sweep the entryway into the firm in the mornings, noticing who was early and who was late. He was a large person in many lives. Sympathies for your loss of such a special person, parent, and partner.

I am truly saddened to hear of John Hughes' passing but how wonderful he was able to live such a long time. I met Mr. Hughes in 1970 when I was hired as secretary for Randy Clapp. I stayed with the firm almost ten years. Mr. Hughes was a real joy that whole time. So many stories and we laughed so much. It was an honor to know him. Mary, my prayers are for you. I know you will miss him so much.

Mary,
I was saddened to learn of your father's passing. He was a delightful person. I recall years ago going to his firm's office to meet with one of the other lawyers in the office. I encountered John shortly after I arrived. With a twinkle in his eyes and a big smile he said "it was so nice of you to stop by the office just to see me." John was a good lawyer and a true gentleman.

Bill and I send out heartfelt condolences to your family. We loved Mr. Hughes and always enjoyed his stories and poems (normally at least one recitation at the Christmas Parties). He will never be forgotten. I'm truly honored to have been able to do things for him at the firm (mostly typing out documents from his hand-written notes). He was a very special person. In Sympathy, Bill & Linda Vinson
