Max was an icon of the North - it was my privilege to work for and with him - RIP
March 27, 2013
I have just learned of Max's passing and want to comment of how much I owe him. When I took over the NPRA program as an Assistant to the Director of the USGS, I knew nothing of the North Slope. But Max and George Gryc padtiently taught me what I needed to survive, both programatically and personally. I echo Stephen Gryc's comment that Max was a great man. Also a wonderful human being and a true delight to be with.

Max was a great friend and colleague of my father, George Gryc, who was Chief of the Alaskan Branch of the USGS for many years. I met up with Max only twice, but each time he took time to take me to someplace special in the Alaska that he loved. He was a great scientist and pioneer. He was also deeply committed to the men and women who shared his passion for "The Great Land." It was a privilege to have met such an extraordinary man.

Met him only once, but was struck by his warmth, his love of life and exploration, and by his dedication to his life's work. I will always remember how the people of Barrow treated him with reverence and respect. He was one of those human beings that everyone should meet in their lives. Gary Schuerfeld

I was on the Slope and didn't see the obituary when it was posted. Mom clued me in yesterday.
Marylou, Bill, Linda, Greg, Karen, Paula; real sorry for your loss. I don't do a great job of staying in touch but I do give thought to people. Especially those that have been generous. Max definitely has been generous with me. I'll miss him too.

My heartfelt sympathy to the family - my father loved visiting with him, mom and Marylou enjoyed each other - such precious memories. My prayers are with you all.

I am truly sorry for your loss. I always knew that Uncle Max was a special indivudual. I never did comprehend the great things that he had accomplished in his life until I read the above article. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
