i knew Ralph at the University of Oregon; he dated my roommate. For some reason, he crossed my mind and I am sorry to hear of his passing so soon. He was a warm caring person who was also pretty funny. As a geology major, at the time, he was always tramping around studying Camus Swale just South of Eugene and he had us out there too in the mud and the weeds. There is a small signpost designation on I-5 at Camus Swale and over the past 50 years whenever I drive from the San Francisco Bay Area to Portland, Oregon, Ralph always comes to mind. A fine and memorable guy.

Irrepressible. Positive. Some physical issues, yet he walked tall. Darby-isms will stay with me a long time.

I very much enjoyed having known Darby and I'm sad to see his obituary. He was a smart, witty and caring person who added a spark to all saw around him.

I feel fortunate to have known and worked with Darby - Alaska will not feel so large without him.

My recollection - fun, caring, cheerful greetings always. Such sad news. Irene, my sympathy. You are in my thoughts.

Darby was a real character. Outspoken, opinionated, playfully irascible. Darby would hold court at CCAC in the early mornings over coffee and crosswords; he loved trading good natured barbs with his (much) more conservative pals. Darby had stories to tell and we heard many; we just didn't have enough time with Darby to hear them all. I am not alone in missing Darby. I am lucky to have known him. Uff da.

Ahh...the captains of 'Moonliter II' and 'Markada' are back together again sailing the celestial seas. Fond remembrances forever etched in memory include being anchored at Culross as Darby became 'chef extraordinaire' cooking up fresh shrimp with his 'secret spice' recipe while, according to him, making the toughest decision of the day....Red or White to go with it! He was a jewel and how he will be missed.

My mom always had a kind heart when it came to you.

Dear Irene,
Darby was such a great guy. I will always think of him with a lab and a boat. I will never forget how glad I was to see him Memorial Day 1982---we were waiting for him to pick us up on a beach in PWS, where he had dropped us off 4 days earlier for a kayak trip. The first morning of the trip a huge bear had awakened us by munching our klepper kayak and dragging it off into the woods in his mouth; the bear came back to the beach to claw the sides of our tent (with me in it), and then chased Cabot (wearing one-piece red long johns) down the beach. An Alaska adventure for sure. And I met you in 75-76 at my first job in AK at the Supreme Court. Peace to you my friend.

I am so sorry for your loss. Memories of Darby are woven into my childhood and never fail to bring a smile to my face.
