AFD Engineer Tom Keene was a dynamic, positive influence in the fire service in Alaska, particularly in the State of Alaska FF-I training program way back in the 1980’s, back in the day when the only place to get this level of professional firefighter training (as far as the Interior of Alaska goes, anyway) was in Anchorage, AND you had to make four trips down there to get all of it to be certified as FF-I. It took quite a commitment, and all the students attending from out of town bunked together in this little living area in what is now the Anchorage Fire Training Center and lived together for the week each time we were there. Many of us would go next door to AFD Sta. 3 and do ride-along’s any time we could. That is a pretty busy house with a truck and an engine (I later learned this is called a “Double House”). I met a lot of great folks doing that and to this day I have always had an indelibly positive impression of AFD.

Tom Keene was a big part of all that, was a great guy, an outstanding Firefighter, and a great example for all of us to aspire to. He will be sorely missed. Plaid shirts and Jeans! That is so Tom Keene! I love it!

Anyone else that was around the fire service “back then”, please remember Tom and all that he did for us. Tom had a positive impact on many, many lives and careers.

Dear Dorothy.. My heart is so sad hearing that you have lost your beloved Tom.. I know he will be missed by many.. I pray that knowing how much so many of us care about you at this time will help you through this sad time.. It is my beliefs that we never really lose our loved ones.. they simply pass from our sight to be joined again in the future.. God bless and keep you.. Love you.. Marilyn Walker (Wishnewitz)
