Tommy David "Dusty" Dillion, born July 3, 1948, in Gary, Indiana, passed away after a brief illness Nov. 16, 2017. Dusty is survived by his wife, Linda Dillion, and step-daughters, Cathy Cox and Julie Gunther; and his sister, Terry Von Loewe.
Dusty lived a full and interesting life. At age 12 he left home and joined the Pollock Circus. In 1967-69, he served the U.S. Army in Vietnam, assigned to combat helicopter assault unit. Returning to the U.S.A., he rejoined the Pollock Circus. In 1972 he attended Laney Jr. College in Oakland specializing in foundry work. He opened his own foundry in Oakland and later moved the business to Berkeley. He produced specialized and custom plaster products for interiors of theaters, stores and restaurants for 25 years. In 1987, Dusty and Linda purchased 20 acres of forest land outside Willits where they built a home and their business and continued his work as a commercial artisan.
In 2003, Dusty and Linda purchased Sportman's Dock at the entrance of the Noyo River, expanding and refurbishing the property and building their home.
Dusty started the Lost Coast Chapter of the Traditional Small Craft Association (pre-power recreational rowing). The group specialized in youth boat building. He joined the Noyo Harbor Commission, serving six years to promote and make changes to improving the Noyo Harbor District.
In 2015, Dusty and Linda opened Djangoes Rough Bar Cafe at their property in Noyo. It became a local "hot spot."
Dusty was well-known for his sense of humor, wit and wisdom that was rarely found in one individual. He loved the community of Fort Bragg and the many friends he made in life.
Interment will be at sea with a celebration of life to be held on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, at 1 p.m. at Djangoes Cafe.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Lost Coast Traditional Small Craft Association for their continued work with building boats. Please call Laura Schroeder, treasurer of Lost Coast TSCA, at 707-357-6065 for more information.
