David Winberg Obituary

David H. Winberg, 72, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on May 23, 2013, in Alamogordo after a long and courageous fight with kidney cancer. He was born Jan. 25, 1941, in Newport, Minn., to Herman and Marie (Carlson) Winberg.
Dave graduated from St. Paul Park High School in 1959. Being a small school, he and his classmates have been really close throughout the years and continue to keep in touch. After graduation, Dave joined the U.S. Air Force, and after flight engineer school, was stationed at Holloman Air Force Base as a flight engineer on the B26 Bomber. Over his six years in the Air Force, he flew over 6,000 hours with some of those hours being combat flying over Southeast Asia. He loved flying, serving his country and military.
After being honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1965, he stayed in Alamogordo and took a manager position at a rental store. His love for tools and equipment inspired him to purchase the business in 1967 and he renamed it Uptown Rentals, which he loved and operated for over 45 years. In 1992, the business was expanded to include party and event rentals, making it the full-service rental store it is today. Dave was a man of honesty and integrity who would do anything he could to help if someone needed it.
As a true community servant, Dave was a well-respected member of the Alamogordo Rotary Club for 34 years. He was a recipient of the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow Award and served in numerous positions. He spearheaded the Mexico Medical Project and traveled there to support Rotary's efforts. He was a huge supporter of the Alamogordo community and was active in several capacities. He was really dedicated to serving others above himself and brought that selflessness to his work and family every day.
One of the most important days of his life was in 2005 when he re-dedicated his life to the Lord. Through his strong faith and dedication to the Lord, the last three years have been a testament to the power of the message of Christ.
Dave was a jack of all-trades and had many interests. He loved his yard, which was perfect and had an overall love of the outdoors, which included fishing, hunting and traveling. One of his most treasured trips was when he took David fishing in the Northwest Territories. The expression on David's face after catching a 46-inch northern pike on his first cast was priceless. His favorite yearly vacation spot was the Hawaiian island of Molokai where he enjoyed the serenity of the natural beauty of His Creator. He also enjoyed the people and culture of the island. Later in life, he took up golf and enjoyed hitting the ball whenever possible. He also loved history and anything to do with the military. If there is any doubt, one only has to look for the large flagpole in his front yard. He loved driving his corvettes on a nice day and playing with his grand-pups when they visited.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father and a niece Michelle (Cook) Sabin.
He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Vicki, of the family home, children Laurel Chandler (Michael) of Anchorage, Alaska, Martha Fields (Todd) of San Antonio, Texas, and Darlynn Perea of Alamogordo, David Summerall (Kellie) of Medical Lake, Wash., and "adopted daughter" Cheryl Walker (Chris) of Gainsville, Va. Grandchildren Rebeka and James Chandler, Katlyn and Caleb Perea, Tiffany and Tim Summerall, and Brooke Walker. He is also survived by sisters Shirley Briggs of New Richmond, Wisc., Marilyn Hammerschmidt of Rosemont, Minn., Carolyn Cook of Newport, Minn., and Darlene Lanners (Chuck) of Hastings, Minn., brother-in-law Jon (Mary Lou) Grabemeyer of Eau Claire, Mich., sister-in-law Kris (Peter) Kugler Marco Island, Fla., and loving mother-in-law Margaret (Maggie) Grabemeyer of Alamogordo and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Tuesday May 28 at 10 a.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with Pastor Howell Scott officiating.
Interment will follow in Monte Vista Cemetery.
Friends and family are welcome at family home at 37 High Sierra from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday.
A really special thank you to friends Wayne and Jan Sandvig and Charlie the therapeutic dog of Gilbert, Ariz. God brought these really special friends into their lives over the last three years and have become a part of our family and second home while going to the Mayo Clinic.
Special thanks are given to Karen and Eddie Norrell, our Bethel Baptist Church family, our Uptown Rentals family and all other friends for all their prayers, love and support over the past three years. Additional thanks are given to the ICU unit at Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center (GCRMC) and to Dr. Smaltz and Dr. Mansoor for all their assistance and medical knowledge.
Dave's motto for the order for living life was: God First, Family Second, Country Third and Self Fourth.
