Mary was always kind and gentle. She had a way of treating you as if what you were saying was the most important thing in the world. She was always there for those of us honored enough to know her, with the right words to buoy us another day.

Mary was a kind and wonderful person as well as a talented journalist. When I was Food and Home Editor of The Sun in the late 1980s, Mary was a news assistant. I recognized her spark and her desire to do good work and promoted her to be one of my reporters. She never disappointed in her work or in her relationships with others. My condolences to her family. I want you to know we all loved and respected Mary.

I am inconsolable. Mary was a dear friend from the moment I met her over twenty years ago when she was a features reporter and I worked in the art department. She remained one of the kindest, smartest, most gracious people I've ever had the honor to know. I do know she was universally loved. I may be far away in Georgia but she was and will always be one of my "Baltimore girls."

I knew Mary while at Cockeysville and Dulaney. I was not surprised to learn that she her passion for journalism had earned the top position at the SUN. My prayers are with her family and friends.

My life was made much, much bigger and brighter by knowing this remarkable person. I think it very likely that a sweeter soul has not walked the Earth in my lifetime, and I treasure the many hours of charming conversation and friendship that I was able to spend with Mary. I'm sure there is no friend, no family member who is not feeling her loss deeply, and I grieve with you. I hope that some solace comes from feeling the gentle warmth that she seemed to spread everywhere. So long, old friend. I miss you, and I thank you.
