It's been 10 years since you left us, however it seems as if it was only yesterday I spoke with you on the phone. Miss you but I close my eyes, listen to your music and I feel your presence. I love you.

I began digging Anita when I was 5 or 6 years old, hearing "Let Me Off Uptown" and "Chickery Chick" on the radio. I was able to see Anita several times: at Chicago's Maryland Hotel in 1958-9, at Marty's in NYC in the early 80s, her 50th anniversary concert at Carnegie Hall in 1985, and at Fat Tuesday's in 1991. Had a chance to chat with her and Gordon Brisker at that last gig. I am still digging Anita as much as, perhaps even more than, ever and have recently purchased a few CDs I didn't have as well as the Tokyo DVD. Only Lady Day approaches Anita in my pantheon of jazz singers. Man, how she enriched my musical life!

Anita was arguably the most rhythmically sophisticated singer in the history of jazz. A fantastic, sweet and creative voice. Perhaps not a household name, but truly an American legend.
