Anita is incredibly special, there is only one. I'd never heard of her until Sept 2010 when on youtube I happened on her performance in the "Summer's Day" movie. I haven't been the same since that day.
I watched the movie about her, then read her book, they are both wonderful.
Anita and all her songs make me so happy, I listen to her every day. She brought me out of my depression and I'll always owe her so much, maybe my life.
She is an angel who will always be remembered. I want more people to keep discovering her and how special she is!

Happy Birthday, Anita. You're still the best. And thanks to the documentary more and more people are discovering you.

I have just watched the documentary and it is a superb picture of a dedicated singer--the voice, phraseology, pauses, are not just professionalism at it best, but comes out of her life. I purchased High Time, Hard Times and have found it so brutally honest--what a being gifted by the hand of Creator and tough trials. I hope I can find all the albums and play them in the car and den. My Mother and Father were the same age as Anita. I didn't apprecite Swing and the 30's-40's Jazz music until later in my life. When I discovered Anita I fell in love with her voice and music. Better late than never. I wish I knew then what I know now and I would have made every attempt to see her in person. What a joy to hear the old records by the true greats. My parents were very fortunate to have seen her in her prime.

It is so good to read the warm tributes to Anita the real life person.

I want to share an anecdote about Anita the artist.

The most hard core jazz afficianado I ever knew, who happened to be black, considered Anita O'Day to be one of the two greatest jazz singers ever (the other being Lady Day).

The angels in Heaven are so fortunate to be serenaded by this superb talent.

My mother told me she knew Anita because she was married to the golf pro at Biltmore Country Club in Barrington, Illinois. I'm guessing they got to know each other in the early 40's. My Dad, William Dahl was a member of Biltmore and a terrific golfer. Mom told me we once visited Anita at her home in Santa Monica, CA. Mom also told me she saw Anita perform when we lived in the San Francisco area in the 80's. Mom said she was able to go backstage with a young friend to see Anita. I don't know why I wasn't along? I watched a program on tv tonight and now realize what a talent Anita was. I hope to purchase some of her work.

My Mom passed away in 2007.

I heard of you Anita through listening to jazz stations playing your recording, but never heard what I experience from this documentary about your life.I could not wait till it was over to go online and buy your recordings. The question I have is where was I at when your legacy was being form? I'm 62 and I'm just realizing this treasure you left.Anyone who has gone but left something to enjoy for life times, was truly meant to be here. Thank you so much.

All down through the years A/D never surrendered her technique, never sang a bad note.
All down through l have modelled my playing on the phrasing and light cadence of those kind of artists.

Anita, Sinatra, Ella, Mose Allison! how could I for get Mose Allison! Not just that but a couple of Canadian singers like Cohen, Joni Mitchell and Gord Lightfoot who were all listening to bob anyhow by that point.

An Anita . . . hope you found that dog.
