Just now, having stumbled across the information about the passing of Dr. Teitelbaum, I am saddened....
Just shy of 24 years ago, I gave birth to a preemie baby boy with several GI and GU anomalies. Born at HFH in Detroit, my son was emergently whisked off to Mott Children's Hospital in AA. My first encounter with Dr. Teitelbaum was a late night phone call to my hospital room at HFH, asking for consent for emergent surgery on my hours old infant. I know I was still in shock about everything... Dr. Teitelbaum updated me on problems my baby was having and how he thought the surgery would help. In the morning, I received another phone call, telling me that my son's condition had deteriorated and I really needed to come to Mott. When I arrived and was allowed to come back to see my baby, I did not recognize him. He was hooked up to so many lines and tubes, and even being an ICU nurse, I thought I was going to faint. Dr. Teitelbaum explained everything. He did not sugar coat anything, but the bad news was expressed in the most gentlest of ways. He did not expect my son to live. I know with all my heart, that Dr. Teitelbaum and Dr. Geiger worked tirelessly to help my child. And they succeeded! Several weeks later, he came home! He still had many hurdles ahead of him and many more surgeries to endure. But, he was alive! My son saw Dr. Teitelbaum regularly for the next 13 years. He taught me so much about my son's problems and how he could have a happy, normal life, regardless.
Dr. Teitelbaum Was a key player in my son growing up to be the extremely intelligent and talented young man that he is today.
I will be forever greatful for the wonderful care and live he gave my son. He always took time to hold him when he was a baby and play with him when he got a little older. Each time I handed my child over to the care of Dr. Teitelbaum, in the OR, I know my son was in good hands. One time, we were in the ER, and he came down to evaluate my son, and rather than waiting for a transporter, he picked up my boy, carried him and wheeled his IV pole all the way to the pre op area. I will be forever grateful for the love and care he gave my son. Our lives were blessed by having him as Matthew's surgeon.
To the Teitelbaum family, I am so sorry for your great loss... My heart is broken for all of you.. God bless you all and thank you so much for sharing your husband and father with our kids who needed him so much. I appreciated him so much....

I regret not having met Dr. Teitelbaum personally. I received a grant in his name and was approached by many people who have been touched by his considerable generosity. I sincerely hope to do right by his legacy and offer my sincere condolences to all those who lost this remarkable presence in their lives.
