Douglas Eye Obituary

Eye, Douglas Douglas Lee Eye, 64, of Stockbridge, died Thursday, October 15, 2015 at home, surrounded by loved ones. Doug was a 1969 graduate of Belleville High School and went on to study dairy science at Michigan State University, where he was a recipient of the Michigan Memorial Dairy Scholarship. He served in the United States Air Force for 10 years and flew B-52s and KC-135s, which led to a successful career of more than 25 years as a pilot for Northwest and Delta Airlines. He was a part of the Saline community for many years; while residing there, he was a valued member of the Friends of the Saline District Library and was active in Saline Area Youth Baseball and Softball. Doug's lifelong dream of farming was realized when he and his wife moved to Stockbridge; for more than 10 years they enjoyed the agrarian lifestyle and delighted in sharing the farm with friends and family, especially their beloved grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stelman and Della Eye, brother Dennis Sohn, daughter Christen Merte, and loyal schnauzer, Mosby. He is survived by his wife, Linda Livingstone; his children, Maureen (Kevin) Krause, Sean (Kirstin) Eye, Barry Eye, and Laura (Justin) Walsh; five grandchildren: Brendan, Natalie, and Lacey Krause, and Liam and Drew Eye; a brother, Tim (JoElin) Eye; his former wife, Linda Broslavick Eye; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend their thanks to Dr. John C. Krauss and his team at University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center for their exceptional care. Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of Doug's life will be held in Stockbridge at a future date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Michigan Dairy Memorial Scholarship. There were many opportunities to tell Doug how important he was to me but instead we talked about arcane military battles or just laughed. I did miss opportunities but I sure had a good time being with him. RIP

I WAS SHOCKED TO STUMBLE ACROSS DOUG´S OBITUARY. HE WAS A GREAT FRIEND TO ME IN OUR LAST YEARS OF COLLEGE AT MICHIGAN STATE. DOUG AND LINDA WELCOMED ME INTO THEIR APARTMENT MANY TIMES TO SIT AND PONDER EVERYTHING AND NOTHING. A GREAT FRIEND. I´M SO SAD THAT WE LET THE YEARS GET BETWEEN US AND WE HADN´T SEEN EACH OTHER IN MANY YEARS. RIP DOUG.

The next door neighbor I would talk with in Saline. He was a man of courage quiet strength and integrity. He loved his kids and spoke of taking them to Scotland for the tatoo there...it is an old traditional celebration in a country he loved to visit. Doug loved his kids. He took care of any around him. This good neighbor was a seasoned ole skipper on the DC-9. It was wonderful to be able to compare notes with a fellow DC-9 Skipper. He was incredibly knowledgeable and if I had any questions he was someone to trust and his advice was second to none. Time moved on and so did we as Saline was just a stop along the way. I was happy to hear about his move to his dream home and to find love again. The advice and know how he passed on is as fresh as my memory of a safe old friend who now is on a trip West....a contrail somewhere over the horizon.....

Doug was so genuine. His work ethic, willingness to help others, wit, attention to detail, and uncommon thoughtfulness were an inspiration.

I am saddened by your loss. Our many visits to the farm are all fond memories.

Hello,
I flew as one of Doug's first officers at Northwest Airlines. He was always a gentleman and a great mentor to us new pilots. Doug was always very fair and made me feel like a valuable part of the team. I had always enjoyed flying with him and will always remember the example he set, even though it has been years since we flew together. My family sends our sincere condolences to you.
Thanks for times we flew together Doug!

My thoughts are with you, Linda. I never walk through the library at Dexter High School without seeing that empty space behind the desk - command central! You are undoubtedly the strongest person I know.

Warm regards,

What a great fellow- I always admired the man. He was not only a fine DC-9 pilot but a great neighbor as well. I will not forget how excited he was to take his son to Scotland and talk about his beloved kids and dream of a farm. I always valued Doug's thoughts and it was a real shame to see his passing.....Godspeed on your flight West Sir. You will be remembered well...and shall be missed.

It was Nov 24, 1997 that I flew with Doug on a DC9 trip from Detroit to Allentown and back. It was the only time I ever flew with him. I was a new hire, just barely out of training, still trying to find out how I fit in as a first officer. He taught me one thing in particular that I often recall whenever the weather becomes a real challenge as it was that night. It's hard to explain here, but it must have been pretty good if I still remember the event 18 years later. Thanks Doug.

I had the distinct pleasure to fly with Captain Eye for 15 years. He was one of the first guys I flew with when I was hired in 1998. Always kind, professional, and easy to work with. Many fun times were had with Doug. Whenever you saw his name on the schedule, you would smile knowing that you were going to have a fun trip. I, as you all, will miss Captain Eye very much. Very special person. Please know that you all are in my thoughts and prayers now and always. He left us with so many great memories. As another pilot friend said......... He was the Renaissance Man. God bless you all,

Doug loved his family, friends, community and country. I already miss his moral compass, curiosity, command of arcane historical facts and wicked sense of humor. I hope that the joy that Doug brought to me and to many others is of some solace to his family.
