Strength of dedication, integrity, and contagious pursuit of wisdom are a good part of Elwood's legacy alongside his beautiful music and selfless serving of others. I've just moved to Indy and opened a box containing envelopes of his articles and unique approaches to music that continue to inspire. He took me under his wing when I would ask for advice as a young member of the UM faculty. There has not been anyone more encouraging, respected, or with a greater wit, than Prof Derr. When I think of him, I see him smiling and hear his wonder-filled laugh. My best to those who might read this, knowing of his continuing positive influence!

My dear Ellwood, how I still miss your scholarship, mentorship, ribaldry and culinary prowess. You were truly a Renaissance man is the finest sense of the word. So odd it was that I was to be briefly in Ann Arbor on the day of your death. My heartfelt sympathies to Michele and your family, and my heartfelt gratitude for your life in service to music and scholarship

As a student in the 70s, I was not ready for Ellwood, and I was not a good student of what it was he had to offer. Years later, as a follower of the Art Fair Song Fest, I heard his wonderful lectures, participated with him in two performances, and learned more from him at that time than a lifetime of formal academic pursuits could have offered. At Mariners' Church of Detroit, we introduced to the repertoire one of his beautiful compositions, and there this week we will sing an American anthem which he brought to our attention, and there we continue to hold him and his teaching, and his wisdom , in the hightest esteeem. Thank you, Ellwood, for everything! Our continued prayers for his family and friends.
