Many thanks to Jack's family for the very special memorial Friday evening! Although we were AHS classmates and shared 3 years on the U of M campus, I didn't know Jack all that well. Oh, there were the News columns in which he talked "Alpena" and one or two AHS reunions and finding him on a walk through his AA neighborhood one day. All the memories you shared gave me a wonderful picture of him. And, the presence of classmate Phil Glennie the other night also helped as he reminisced about their friendship in the AHS and U of M days. God's peace and comfort!

I was twice blessed by the luck of the Irish because Jack Gillard was my editor at the Des Moines Register and my forever friend. He was a brilliant writer with a wicked wit and a keen eye for the memorable oddball story. Who knew that a front-page story on the misadventures of two fugitive pigs would delight so many readers? Jack did. He was a meticulous editor and mentor whose passion for newspaper excellence was contagious. And as life's narrator, he was the best. Through the years, if I needed a question answered, I didn't Google it. I'd Gillard it in lengthy phone chats. So farewell, Jack. May the good saints protect you and bless you today.

Jack was one of the "gang" of kids that hung out in Alpena back in the 50s. His sense of humor was exceptional. I was excited to "find" his column in the Ann Arbor paper some years ago and read it with enjoyment every chance I had. Like many of us from "up north", our lives moved on to many places as we grew older. I shall always remember Jack fondly, as well as the good times we shared. William M.(Bill) Foster. Dear Mary Lou,
I enjoyed seeing Jack from time to time in the Maple Road Kroger store. His columns were one of my favorite Ann Arbor News reads. The column offering choice of slogans for Ann Arbor will live on if only in my mind. Choice humor and a tremendous love for this city lived side by side in your wonderful spouse. Thank you and your family for sharing him with us over the years. We will miss him too.

Truly an Ann Arbor icon. Many thanks, Jack, for a lot of laughter and a few tears over the years. Deepest condolences to your family. From a long time admiring fan.
