Shocked to learn about this sad news today. I took the advanced software engineering course with Dr Sayler back in 2000. Till this day almost 15+ years later, Prof Sayler still stands out as one of the few great professor who made an impact on my life. I'm sure he's inspired many other students as well during his tenure. Thank you and you'll always be remembered!

Dear Judy,
I heard about John's passing with great sadness. He had been lunching with a group of us computer science old-timers in Ann Arbor once a month, and we were looking forward to seeing him again in April. John was a great colleague of mine for over 35 years. He and Bill Riddle created the first course in software engineering in the CCS Department at the University of Michigan in the 1970's, and I adapted it to the EECS Department in 1980. John and I both taught the course many times in the 80's and 90's. I also participated in his seminars to Japanese businessmen in Santa Fe. Over the years, we had a standing semi-annual lunch at a local Chinese restaurant to talk about research, potential collaborations, and life. John had great stories and a very thoughtful perspective on many things. I will miss him greatly. Toby Teorey.

Judy and Ben,

We were really sorry to hear of John's death. We have so many great memories of your family--Ben and Cai crossing the schoolyard holding hands at CPS, soccer, bowing (or not) to the flag, gorgonzola, sleep overs, trips to the hop, to your cottage, trick or treating, by a broom, transformers. It seems impossible we won't hear his laugh again; he was an exceptional guy.
