I met Karl decades ago and remember enjoyable times and discussions. He has always been so genuinely outwardly interested, a real value in times like ours, where excessive self-motivation seems to prevail. He has spent many years well-lived, it seems, and is irreplaceable to those who ever knew him. I feel a great loss, not only because he died so young, but I also did not have a chance to maintain the connection. Am catching up as I can (too late!) with his blog. My thoughts and prayers to his family.

As a book lover, writer and advocate for downtown, Karl was a hero of mine. The Universe is still a better place with him in it.

I'm so sad to hear about Karl's youthful death. I had wonderful times with Karl when we were teens in Cross Village Michigan. At that time he was genuinely kind, a good listener, thoughtful, intellectual, a loaner and giver of books, a stimulating thinker, a supportive friend. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

So sorry to read of Karl's passing. He was such a fine person and a genuine community asset. The good do seem to die young. My condolences to his family.

Karl has always been a large figure in my mind, since his start opening Shaman Drum many years ago. Beth Hunter and I were early supporters of his bookstore. Karl informed us that we were among a dozen people who helped get the store off to a good start. We eagerly looked forward to driving up from Toledo and returning with a stack of fascinating, substantive volumes that never failed to feed our imagination. I last saw Karl the day after he was diagnosed with anaplastic thyroid cancer. My current wife Maureen and I shared lunch and recounted some of our memories of fine moments together. Karl's death opens up a huge hole in our lives. He will have a shrine in our hearts.
