Mary Carter Obituary

Carter, Mary L. 10/29/1943 - 4/28/2015 Ann Arbor Mary L. Carter, accounting professional, beloved family member, and loyal friend died April 28, 2015 at Arbor Hospice in Ann Arbor after a brief illness. She was born October 29, 1943 in Flint, Michigan, the daughter of Ivan & Frances Tuttle. Mary grew up in the small town of Fenton, Michigan with her siblings Sally Jo and Sue Ann. After high school, she attended Eastern Michigan University to pursue a career in business accounting. In her early twenties, Mary worked for the Ann Arbor Police Department, as a night dispatcher. However, as much as she enjoyed the police department culture, warmer weather called to her senses and as a result she set off on a new adventure that took her to southern Florida. She met and married Allen Ray Carter in 1972 and they opened several successful Gulf Oil Service Stations in the Palm Beach, Florida area. Additionally, ever the professional, Mary formed her own accounting and bookkeeping business, known as Carter Business Services, Inc. and also became the President of her local business organization. After many years in Florida, Mary decided it was time to return to her home state. She settled in Dexter and once again pursued her passion of assisting clients with their accounting, tax, and bookkeeping challenges. She began her endeavor in 1993 and was still servicing her many clients until her recent illness. While residing in Dexter, Mary served as the Treasurer for the Annual Dexter Daze event in Dexter for many years; she held a seat on the Dexter Village Planning Commission, and remained a devoted member of the Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce. She also had a hand in organizing the annual Christmas Eve Luminary Event in Dexter for several years. On a personal level, Mary enjoyed the game of golf and played for many years; She was also an avid reader of novels, enjoyed her weekly card games and had a great love for northern Michigan. She also loved her four legged roommate and companion, her dog Penny. Mary will be missed by her family, friends and clients. She was preceded in death by her husband Allen Ray Carter, Sister Sally Jo and her parents. She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Al Honke of Dexter, MI, her niece, Victoria Staebler, her nephew and niece-in-law, Don & Jean-Marie Staebler, of Pinckney, her great nephew, Austin Staebler, of Pinckney, her close friend Fran Vantine and many other friends, nieces and nephews.
