After high school, she attended Eastern Michigan University to pursue a career in business accounting. In her early twenties, Mary worked for the Ann Arbor Police Department, as a night dispatcher. She met and married Allen Ray Carter in 1972 and they opened several successful Gulf Oil Service Stations in the Palm Beach, Florida area. Additionally, ever the professional, Mary formed her own accounting and bookkeeping business, known as Carter Business Services, Inc. and also became the President of her local business organization. After many years in Florida, Mary decided it was time to return to her home state. She settled in Dexter and once again pursued her passion of assisting clients with their accounting, tax, and bookkeeping challenges. She began her endeavor in 1993 and was still servicing her many clients until her recent illness. While residing in Dexter, Mary served as the Treasurer for the Annual Dexter Daze event in Dexter for many years; she held a seat on the Dexter Village Planning Commission, and remained a devoted member of the Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce. She also had a hand in organizing the annual Christmas Eve Luminary Event in Dexter for several years. On a personal level, Mary enjoyed the game of golf and played for many years; She was also an avid reader of novels, enjoyed her weekly card games and had a great love for northern Michigan. She also loved her four legged roommate and companion, her dog Penny. Mary will be missed by her family, friends and clients.
