Mr. Sutherland, as he was known to me when I was a child, was a very special and kind man. I remember seeing him working in the garden, smoking the bees dressed in his netted hat, gathering sap from the maples to make syrup, mowing paths for us to run through, setting up many tents for us to sleep in, and driving us to the lake in the back of his pick-up truck. He seemed to know everything about plants and animals, and he was always willing to help. Such good times I had at the Sutherland house. He and his family were a happy part of my childhood. My thoughts and sympathies are with the Sutherland family.

Roger was the perfect next-door neighbor. Joan and I will miss him greatly.

Jerry & I had many lovely chats with Roger while walking down our beloved Warren Rd.
He will be so missed by all in the neighborhood. We will all be for Mary for anything she needs.

I worked as Dr. Roger Sutherland's assistant from 1980 to 1982 while I was a student at SchoolCraft College. He was my teacher, boss, mentor, and always an example of what it meant to be a consummate gentlemen. I am proud to say I helped him set-up the very first bee hive at SchoolCraft College. I had not seen him in many years, but was blessed to have been afforded an opportunity to spend time with him again just this past January at the Ann Arbor Backyard Beekeepers club meeting. I was so looking forward to spending more time with him at the next meeting, but thank God, and am grateful for what little time I was given. I have no doubt there is now a bee hive at the right hand of God.
