Wendy Comstock Obituary

Comstock, Wendy Lee 5/20/1952 - 5/25/2016 Ann Arbor Wendy Lee Comstock, from Ann Arbor, Michigan, loving daughter, wife, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at home surrounded by her family. Born in Ann Arbor on May 20, 1952, she is the daughter of Enid McConkey Gosling and the late John Roderick Gwynne Gosling.

Wendy was a member of the Highpointer's Club for many years where she was able to share her love of mountain climbing with others. Among her favorite climbs were Mount Katahdin in Maine, Mount Massive in Colorado, and Wheeler Peak in New Mexico. She was awarded the prestigious "Vin Hoeman" award from the Highpointer's club for meritorious service in 2014. She and her beloved husband, Mark Comstock, traveled all over the world, having frequented 49 of the 50 states, even internationally to Asia, Africa, South America, and Europe. Wendy was part of the University of Michigan's Musical Society Advisory Board where her passion for the arts was recognized. She attended the Choral Union series concerts at Hill Auditorium for over 30 years with her mother and husband. She had a phenomenal love for the Stratford Shakespearean Festival, having attended it every year for 50 years. Additionally her European travels often included viewing and studying the world's fabulous works of art.

Wendy had many talents and was known for her expertise in cooking, even having been trained by select well-known French chefs. She regularly attended cooking classes and was a regular at the Kitchen Port in Ann Arbor. Her collection of cookbooks grew over the years and now exceeds 400. She took Italian classes through Paesano's Italian Restaurant in Ann Arbor to further her knowledge. Along with Wendy's love of cooking came her love for gardening. Known as the "Master Gardener" to her family and friends, Wendy's garden was always in full bloom and, in some years, there was something blooming in every month of the year, which in Michigan is no easy feat! She collected clocks, enjoyed playing volleyball both indoors and outdoors, and loved reading and studying literature. Her love of water can be traced back to her younger years where she grew up sailing on Barton Pond. She enjoyed regular visits to Saginaw Bay with her husband to boat with friends the Wright, Taylor, and Barrett families.

Wendy's love and zest for the world and for others showed. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, having touched each and every one of them in a special way. She had a fabulous smile and delighted in making everyone who visited her home feel welcomed and appreciated. Wendy is survived by her mother Enid McConkey Gosling, her loving husband, Mark, of 35 years, her brother John Rex Gosling and his partner Barbara Voss, nieces Emily and Sarah and nephew John, and their mother Joanne Prakapas, niece Heather Poland, and nephews Eric and Jeremy. She is preceded in death by her father John Roderick Gwynne Gosling, two infant siblings, and her brother Geoffrey.

Special thanks are given to the staff at Arbor Hospice, Amanda at Senior Helpers, the Nie Funeral Home, her primary care doctor Dr. Elizabeth Jones, Dr. Robert Fontana from the University of Michigan Transplant Center, and all of her wonderful friends who came to visit with her in the final weeks of her life to share stories about her very rich life. A very special thank you to her niece Emily Gosling and to Joanne Prakapas who were with Wendy and her husband Mark 24/7 in her final days.

The family will receive friends, Saturday, June 4, 2016 from 1:00 pm 2:00 pm at the Nie Family Funeral Home, 3767 W. Liberty Rd., Ann Arbor, MI. A memorial service will follow beginning at 2:00 pm officiated by Reverend Tom Burdette. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society, University Musical Society, or the High Pointers Club, all of which held a special place in Wendy's heart.

Wendy was one of the nicest people I had the opportunity to meet and enjoy the outdoors with. Smart, beautiful, honest, and dedicated partner to her husband, Mark. Well wishes and blessing from your "family" on the West Coast.

Dear Mark,
When I heard the news, I was incredibly saddened. I knew it was just a matter of time, but time I thought would be a little longer! We never really think that those so near and dear to us will really pass, so I know this must be especially hard on you and I can't imagine what you're going through. One thing is for certain and that is you have a beautiful family and friends that love you dearly and will be by your side during this difficult time.

It seems like yesterday when I met Wendy. I felt we connected immediately. She radiated love, warmth, compassion, and devotion for you, for her friends and for her family. She opened her heart and home up to me and I knew instantly we would have this bond. Even though our time was short, I loved listening to her go on for hours as we talked about her past, her accomplishments, and the love she had for arts and cooking. I know Wendy was well loved and respected. She had this character about her and a big ole heart. Those will be the things I will remember with a huge smile on my face!

Another thing I can honestly say, is those who love us never go away..... may your heart soon be filled wonderful memories of joyful times that you both shared together and may those memories bring you solace during this time. My heartfelt sympathies to you --- I was honored to meet such a kind soul. Much love to you,
