Deep sympathy. He was a great human being. He was so much a part of my life, a piece of me has passed.
April 22, 2013

Apr. 22, 2013 is a very sad day for so many throughout the world and for me personally. . .Working with Richie to write his book - a very good book, one with no curse words, no sexual exploits, but a book that shared how he self taught himself virtually everything, as a way to give the impetus to children to push forward with their own dreams, - was the single most enjoyable professional experience of my life.

Besides that, he was a great friend, an amazing, fantastic performer, a truly warm hearted, giving human being.
I was most privileged to co author his autobiography in 1999, "They Can't Hide Us Anymore," which is what he said looking out to the 500,000 in attendance when he was asked to perform first of all the talents who would appear there. . . .The promoters of the event actually appealed to Richie to perform for 20 minutes or so, because no one wanted to be first.
Instead of 20 minutes, the crowd kept him on stage for more than 2 hours with their cheers and demands for more.

Frankly, if you never saw Richie perform over the nearly 40 years he appeared in so many places, or the 14 times he sang so passionately and played his amazing guitar on the old Johnny Carson Show, you missed one of the most dynamic singer-performers of modern times, truly so.
Many throughout the world loved this man, a member of Folk Music's Hall of Fame, who helped the careers of so many in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame that he should be there too. God bless Richie Havens, God blessed us with his presence.
