I never met Mr. Sposa in person, but I felt like I knew him from hearing him on the radio. I grew up about 60 miles from Richmond, but we could pick up WRNL well on our radio. Listening to Tony Sposa was like visiting with a friend (with music, news and commercials added, of course). He made listeners feel comfortable and welcome.

I learned of his death only yesterday. Hoping to expand Wikipedia's article on WRNL, I searched for Tony Sposa on the Internet, and this page was one that came up. I am sorry to hear of his death. His passing is a loss, but he leaves a great legacy from his radio days.

Tony will be forever remembered as one of Richmond's GREAT radio announcers, joining the ranks of those who have passed on before him like Harvey Hudson, Alden Aaroe and Lud Sterling just to mention a few. I was fortunate to work with Tony at WRGM where hs sponsored his own Sunday afternoon show in the early 70's. He was a true professional and a fine gentleman and will be missed.

It's been years and years but I have the best memories of being a student of Tony's at the Broadcast Academy. Taught by Tony, Karen and Leonard Lamb. Tony was a special person to all of the students - he had a big heart and a wonderful voice...always had time for anyone who needed him.

Sposas,
Some of the most memorable, enjoyable times in my life were on the little league ball field. The most memorable of those were played with Tony as coach. As noted in the impressive obituary, he brought out the talent in everyone. I remember him keeping everyone at ease; he always made us feel we could win.
What a great man.
I'm so sorry for your loss.

I will always remember when back in the early 1960's Tony and WRNL sponsored a 50 mile hike through and around Richmond. Perhaps the idea came from President Kennedy promoting walking as healthy exercise. Tony took the ball and walked with it.

Tony challenged Richmonders to join him for the 50 miler which began at 5:30 a.m. My father Joe Ukrop trained for the event for months. He joined Tony and other walkers for the event which concluded at 10:30 p.m. with my father being the first to cross the finish line.

As a result of Tony's ecouragement and inspiration, my father and dozens of Richmonders started walking on a regular basis.

As with other of aspects of life of service, he made a difference in the lives of others.

With Gratitude,

Bobby Ukrop
