I was a South Carolina State Trooper in the early 1980's when Notre Dame came to Columbia, SC to play the University of SC in football. I was assigned to work the game which was a great thrill for me personally because I have been a lifelong Notre Dame football fan. As I observed from the ND sidelines, Quarterback Blair Kiel drove the Fightin' Irish to an impressive victory over Carolina. After the game, I found Blair and asked him for an autograph on a football program that I had earlier acquired. I was about eight years older than Blair but he was definitely my ND hero! He graciously signed his name with a big smile while letting me know how much he appreciated the job that I was doing. We shook hands and Blair moved on with the rest of the team as I thought about how much more he had become to me than just a football hero. His integrity and class soared through the roof and has stayed with me as the man I tried to be throughout a thirty year law enforcement career and beyond. God Bless you Blair Kiel and God Bless your Family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all!

You were a game changer both on the field and in the game of life

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

A year ago today was truly the best Saturday of my life spending every minute with you - wonderful moments, loving conversations, your precious letter, endless laughs and your beautiful voice singing Stevie Wonder and John Legend as we danced...anywhere & everywhere even in the store that day. I should have sensed it was too perfect but we had so many of those days the past few years. Only hours later, Easter Sunday morning was the worst day of my life & one that changed my life forever. I still can't believe you are gone. Thank you for listening when I still talk to you or ask advice. Thank you for sending me those special "signs" - giving me peace you are watching and gently leading as the QB always. I'm trying to be your "back up" like we used to play but the plan was as a team - it's not the same without my BK. I love & miss you with all my heart & soul...and will forever. It was your one candle wish! Xoxo

Almost a year ago,we were all shocked to hear the sad news of Blair's passing. Blair was such a role model for our boys, they were fortunate to have his help at summer camp at the boys club in Columbus. Blair always had a smile on his face and a great personality.

Like many other comments here, I, too, went to school with Blair at ND. We met on the first day freshman year in class.
We took other business classes together throuout our years atND and worked on projects together. He was as down to earth as any other friend and worked hard in class. I always enjoyed his company and am very sorry to hear of his passing. I keep up with Class news but never heard of his death until today. Rest in peace my friend.

I never really knew Mr. Kiel. I did have the pleasure of him being a chaperon for my 3rd grade, Mabel McDowell Elementary, class when we went to visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He was like a god to us little kids. He took the time to talk to us and answer our questions. He should always be remembered this way.

I was watching the Notre Dame game today and I heard them refer to the late Blair Kiel. I was shocked, I didn't even know. I went to school with Blair, he was always very kind, I wasn't very popular in school, but he didn't seem to care what others thought, he treated me nice every time we talked. I remember talking to him about colleges, and things after high school was over. Treated me as if I was somebody. Then I seen him at the Hoosier Dome in the early 90's, the same thing, he came up and talked. I give him as an example to my grandson when I tell him to be nice to everyone, no-matter what thier looks may be, or if they are different. Blairs parents done a great job riasing him. I wish I had known befor now, but my heart is still saddened the same. God Bless

My son and I saw you Blair when you played for the Packers. We came over to Green Bay for training camp. We watched practice as you threw the football over the fence to the crowd with a big smile on your face. You also signed my sons football as you walked from the practice field to the stadium. We still have the ball. I just found out you passed away tonite looking online at Packer quarterback stats. R>I>P number 10.

I woke up at 2:45 this morning thinking about you Blair. Then I remembered the date. May 8. It's been a month already yet it seems like yesterday. I think about you all the time Blair. I'm so glad I was fortunate enough to get to know your sweet sensitive side...one I have a feeling few were able or willing to see. You've helped me in so many ways my friend. I miss our chats so much and every day at work, when I walk through certain areas...there you are...still...with that silly grin on your face.

To the Kiel family:
Your father, son, brother and uncle was one of the toughest players I ever covered at Notre Dame, and he was not always treated with the respect that he certainly earned. He and the Notre Dame team deserved so much better his senior year.

I will remember his pass to Tony Hunter that set up Harry Oliver's FG that beat Michigan, his coolness in engineering the upset of No. 1 Pittsburgh, the victory over Doug Flutie and Boston College at the Liberty Bowl.

Blair, you have certainly earned your place in Heaven with God, Jesus and Mary, our Mother, Notre Dame.

Some of the best years of my life were spent with this man. From the football fields coaching our kids to family gatherings, the special moments were too many to count. Blair's coaching prowess in the Hamilton Southeastern Youth Football League set the standard for excellence that is reflected now on the High School level at HSE and Fishers High Schools. His competitive spirit and commitment to his players were awe inspiring. He had a presence about him that made you want to be with him. We will never forget you, Blair Kiel. God Bless you, my friend.

Blair was a great guy who will be missed by many. I had the privilege of getting to know Blair on a personal level and he proved to be one of the most sincere, compassionate people I know. Life always didn't go as Blair planned but he never lost hope and he never gave up! He was a competitor on the football field but more importantly he was a competitor in life. RIP

My wife and I had the great pleasure of meeting Blair 18 months ago. We connected very quickly because of Blair's infectious personality and big heart. We shared stories of Blair's great life but he was genuinely interested in talking about others and the people whom he loved. I will miss him dearly.

R.I.P. my friend. Blair coached my son's football team in the HSE league in 2005-2006. He was a great coach. Taught Jake and the boys how to be team players...how to lose with dignity and how to respect eachother and others. Blair and I became friends in the years to follow and he was truly a good man and a good friend. I will miss you Blair...

I had the pleasure of representing Blair during his NFL career but he was so much more than a client. We were friends first and I was deeply saddened to hear the news yesterday.I'm only comforted in knowing that he's now wrapped in the arms on OUR Lady, his family members and the ND family who once again cheered his arrival on the "Lord's Field". Rest in Peace and GO Irish
