Bill Barrie Obituary

Bill Joseph Barrie, Jr., 65, of Marysville, CA, passed on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 with his family by his side.

Bill was born in Marysville to Bill Barrie, Sr. and Arlene Andrade Barrie (Gaston) on May 27, 1951. A lifelong Yuba-Sutter resident, he was a 1968 graduate of Marysville High School. After graduation, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served for two years during the Korean War, including a tour in Pohnpei.

During his time in the Army, Bill took an interest in surveying, drafting, and civil engineering. Upon his return from service, he started working in the engineering field as a surveyor and later became a draftsman for Von Geldern Engineering. He retired from MacKay & Somps in 2016.

Bill married Jorja Kay Reusser on July 21, 1979 in Marysville. They were married for 37 years and have two children, Bret Barrie of Yuba City (Jessica) and Janelle Barrie of Turlock (David Linn).

He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren; Ruby Linn, Jack Linn, Weston Linn, and Gage Barrie. He is also survived by his mother, Arlene Gaston; sisters Kat Barrie, Patricia Burns, and Nona Gunnell; and his brothers, Terry Hafner, Alan Hafner, and Jim Barrie, in addition to several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his father, Bill J. Barrie, Sr. and his nephew, David Burns.

I am so sorry for the loss of your loved one. Please find peace and comfort in Psalms in Psalms 119:76.

I just want to say I'm in shock that he is gone.
He was a very intelligent, kind person. He was a great father to his kids. Always talked about his daughter and son. I do know that he was proud of his grandchildren. He was the best AutoCad drafter in the engineering business. Everyone wanted to hire him. We will miss him very much.

I am truly sorry to read this. He was a great neighbor and lots of fun at Saddleback. Great guy and very good friend to have. You all are in my prayers and thoughts.

I send my sincere condolences to you Jorga, Brett and Janelle. Diana and I will not be able to attend the celebration of life for Bill, but I would like to share my rememberences of Bill with you. I worked with Bill at von Geldern Engineering the whole time he worked there, and kept in touch with him on occasion when he left. I knew Bill when he worked for Gillette and Harris Engineering through a mutual friend, and was really impressed with his work. A really good draftsman is non-existent. I recommended him to von Geldern when they needed a draftsman, but at the time I really didn't know how gifted he was. He was basically an artist that could take a lot of crude information and compose it onto a sheet of paper with lettering, symbols and other information into a readable and basically an informative work of art, this also included construction plans. I also didn't know of the extensive background he had in surveying and civil engineering. He was the only draftsman that I ever worked with that you didn't have you work after giving them the raw data. if you made a mistake he would catch it, or if some of your thoughts he didn't agree with, he would bring it to your attention for discussion. He always made me look pretty good. I always felt confident in everything he did and felt he always had your back. Bill took pride in what he did. He was the first, probably in this whole area, to learn computer aided drafting. At first it was so cumbersome and complicated that it was a toss-up if it was better than drafting by hand, and it took a lot patience to stick with it. The computer program is now a design tool as well as a drafting tool, which is what was right in Bill's wheel house. All his work will probably only be appreciated by people in the surveying and engineering fields that will cite his work as references in their work. Two visible examples of his artistry is the logo on the front of the old Harter Cannery bldg on Harter Parkway road just past Walmart. Bill constructed this and a contractor installed it. The other is a brass cutout of and old surveyor's transit installed in the entry floor of von Geldern Engineering bldg. There maybe more examples of his artistic and construct abilities.

Bill, Dean Chellis (deceased),, Bill Walker, and I went to the island of Ponape in Micronesia for preliminary engineering work for installation of a water line for the town. We didn't anticipate the difficulty of the works as Ponape is a lush tropical jungle with an average rainfall of over 400 inches and a culture that was qui9te a shock to all of us. Bill's ingenuity and hard work was more that instrumental in getting the job done. We were quite the celebrities there because we had florescence flagging that the natives made headbands or necklaces out of. We were invited to the governor's house for dinner and met the chiefs of the tribes along with a lot of the people. The work was hard, but we had fun an lots of good memories from that place and I am sure Bill shard them with you also.

One thing was always certain, we always had fun when we worked together, Ponape, playing darts after work, drinking a few beers at the Corner Bar, football pools, B'S ing, etc.

I will miss Bill even though since I retired our paths haven't crossed, but I will always have fond memories of Bill and I am proud to call him my friend.

Billy was my husbands brother and a darned good one ! We looked forward to him coming to visit on Wednesdays and we'd always sit out on the porch and laugh and talk and enjoy each others company. Billy had a wonderful sense of humor, a huge heart and a quiet soul. We will miss him horribly but were SO fortunate to have had him in our lives !
