Oh my goodness. Jerry Matthews. What good memories just hearing his name. When I was a kid, I thought of him as the "nice" one of the Matthews brothers--Joe kinda scared me. He was our Sunday School teacher just before we all morphed into teenagers. I believe it was Jerry who bravely took the class to the Big City to see "The 10 Commandments." Later on while attending BYU I was a rebel without a clue. Jerry was a campus cop there. He took me under his wing and saved me from myself. I remember eating Sunday dinner with him and Bev and the kids in their little apartment at the Y. And as a really little kid, I too remember those Saturday night Ward dances where Jerry and Joe led a real orchesta playing the tunes that our folks loved to dance to. Like I said, thoughts regarding Jerry Matthews are nothing but good. It's too late to warn him now, but I'll bet my dad was overjoyed to see him and hasn't stopped talking with him yet. Condolences to Bev and the rest of the family. I really wish I could have been there for the services.

I produced a documentary of the 1955 flood for the County of Sutter. Jerry was a rookie Yuba City police officer at the time of the flood and participated in the documentary. I will never forget the stories he told and the raw emotion with which he told the stories, more than five decades later. He later worked with my father at Caltrans. I spent less than two hours with Jerry, but have thought about him often. Good man.

I had the honor and pleasure of working with Jerry for a couple of years when I was a young engineer at Caltrans. Jerry had returned to Caltrans after many years in the restaurant business. He was born the same year as my dad, and he was a father figure to me.

Thank you, Jerry, for all you taught me, and for being a friend. God bless you and your family.
