Gurmit Singh Takhar

Gurmit Singh Takhar, age 82, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2014 in the company of family. He was born February 22, 1932 in the village of Shanker in Punjab, India.

He is survived by his wife, Harbhajan; his daughter, Kalminder and her husband Satnam Bhullar; his eldest son, Sarbjit and his wife Sukhvinder, and his youngest son Bobby and his wife Amarjit. He was blessed with seven grandchildren, Sunny, Maneet, Saveena, Shannan, Jasleen, Shaun, and Jevin. He especially enjoyed being able to see his oldest grandson, Sunny, getting married to Jasmine in 2010 and welcoming her to our family.

He spent his youth taking care of the family farm in India before migrating to the United States in 1967. Like most immigrants, he started with nothing and built a wonderful life for himself and his family in this land of opportunity. He was especially proud that his kids are successful in their own endeavors and were blessed with happy lives.

He retired in 1994 after an accident. He then enjoyed a retirement that many of us only dream of. He managed to enjoy many vacations to his beloved hometown of Shanker in India. He spent three months a year in India every year for over a decade. He got to see his childhood friends from India every year and cherished those visits. We can only hope that we are blessed with as good a life as he was.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, October 19, 2014 at Ullrey Memorial Chapel.
