I'm very sorry to hear of Mel's passing. I'll forever remember Mel and the Wood household as our 2nd home when we were in high school/JC (with Ed). We were always treated just like family.

My deepest condolences to the family of Mel. So many good memories flood in when I think of the Wood family. My parents, Jim and Bickie Paine, played a lot of Pinochle with Frankie & Mel and a rowdy group of friends; at least once a month for 30 years. In the 1950s, parents didn't hire babysitters - they took the kids along. At bedtime the young kids were laid down on the floor (or wherever) and went to sleep. The adults continued partying and talking and laughing - well lubricated and seldom quiet. I grew up with the comfort of listening to adults having a good time - and 60 years later, I still can't sleep in a quiet space.

I remember Mel for his kind smile, the smell of his pipe tobacco, his thoughtfulness of others, his hard work ethic, fun parties, and most of all for his generous laughter. His loss will leave a hole in so many hearts.

Mel Wood had a big influence over my young life. I remember the times when he would come and visit with my father (Wesley Wood)who Mel called Ike. I looked up to him as the kind of a man that I should be when I grew up. He always had a good or kind word for me when he came by our home. For that influence I say thank you.
