The "Dakota Hymn," "Dakota Odowan 141," "Great Spirit God," as Sidney translated the title and all seven verses, brought our paths together first through correspondence these last two years (where he shared the history of the hymn, the Dakota 38, his family, and Santee Sioux history) and then with a visit November 7 of this year at his place in Flandreau on our way to Standing Rock. Our hearts wept when we just learned of his passing but rejoiced that our lives briefly intersected and that his legacy will live on through all whose lives he touched. Sidney's love of the Great Spirit God, his faith, the church, his family, his Native American People, his friends; his compassion and passion for justice for all people and creation; his great story telling, and his sharp wit and wonderful sense of humor were a gift to all who knew him. Our prayers are with his family, friends, colleagues, and church. We are so grateful for the unique and unrepeatable being Sidney was and for the presence he continues to be among us. He was a strong, gentle Spirit Giant whose wisdom, and itinerate witness to the Great Spirit God was steadfast until his last breath at almost 98 winters. Thanks be to God!

My husband Alan Kitto would not be a Presbyterian minister if it wasn't for Syds persistence in talking to him at Lower Brule SD. Al was principal at Lower Brule Indian School, there. Al had just got done untangling a bad situation and didn't want to see anyone in his office, but Sid insisted to talk to him. It was then that Sid talked to All about being a Presbyterian mimister. After attending Dubuque seminary, at Dubuque, Iowa he served Dakota Presbytery for 30 years until his retirement. What a blessing he was to our family. We will always remember his good humor and loving ways. My husband and I will miss him, he will be missed by many who loved him.
