I met Robert when I arrived with my family in Athens in 1981 to take up a job at Sunpower, Inc. to work on the free-piston Stirling engine. At that time Robert was a professor at Ohio University and also provided advice to Sunpower on a number of technical items. There was an opinion then amongst those who had taken a hard look at the free-piston Stirling engine, that it was a combination of two bad ideas; the Stirling engine and the free-piston concept. From hindsight it is easy to see that this situation would have intrigued Robert. I remember discussing these items with Robert and we concluded that the behavior of the machine was tractable, and it could be shown that operation was possible under very specific circumstances. This lead to a journal paper that was published in 1985 on which I was delighted to be the second author. I believe this to have been the first clear, non-intuitive understanding of how these machines work. It is still regularly cited as a core reference paper.

Robert's curiosity, his ability to deep-think problems and a stupendous applied mathematical agility has very largely contributed to the practical success of Stirling machinery. There is almost no place in my professional life where my eyes do not fall on something that Robert has helped me with or where he has made an outright novel contribution. In addition to this, his broad well-informed interests, generosity and genuine humility leave a void that is not fillable.

My deepest condolences to Joanne, Paul and Ruth.

I had the distinct honor of working closely with Dr. Redlich on the development of his FLDT at Sunpower. I marveled at his problem solving tenacity, always seeking to improve the products he had invented. It was a wonderful learning experience for me. He was also right in there for our basketball games. My deep condolences to you Joanne and family.
