Asiemoula Papadopoulos Obituary

Mama P, Asiemoula Papadopoulos, founder of the Athens Pizza restaurant near Emory University, died July 19, 2017. She was 81.
Born 81 years ago in what was then the Soviet republic of Georgia, Asiemoula "Mama P" Papadopoulos died while swimming in the Tolo Bay in Greece, her ancestral home. She had summered there for the last 20 or so years, a well-deserved respite from a lifetime of hard work, and hard knocks.
Hers was the infectious smile that greeted customers at Athens Pizza for 40 years, but Asiemoula Papadopoulos was much more than that.
"She was ahead of her time ... the epitome of the modern woman," said her youngest son, Sandy Papadopoulos, who now runs the north Decatur restaurant opened by his parents in 1977.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, at Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation, 2500 Clairmont Road, Atlanta. A.S. Turner & Sons is handling arrangements.

Dear Sandy and Family,
We are only now learning of Mama P's passing and still in shock. There wasn't a time when we visited Athens Pizza on Thursday for her wonderful lamb shank dinner that she always met us at the door and would tell Richard to "come with me" and off they would go the the kitchen for her to show off her latest triumph in her never ending knowledge of food. Since moving away from Atlanta over 10 years ago we have not had the opportunity to revisit that wonderful place called "Athens Pizza". We thought of you and Mama P often wishing for a slice of her great pizza. We will always honor Mama P in our lives and wish for you and your family peace and comfort in knowing she was and still is loved by so very many people.

Deeply saddened to hear the news, today, of Asiemoula'a passing .

Please accept my condolences, to Sandy and to the entire family for their loss.

Asiemoula hired me and took me in at age 20 as a young waiter and trained me; she was deeply caring, offering advice as I made my way as a young fellow from coastal Georgia in the big city of Atlanta. I have the fondest memories of my years there but particularly of her and the maternal care she extended to all of us. She will always be in my prayers and thoughts.

We enjoyed her smile and her kind words every time we visited Athens Pizza - which is often! What a beautiful woman who offered a warm and wonderful welcome to everyone who walked through the door. We were out of town and only learned about her death when we walked into the restaurant on Tuesday night - noticed she was not in her usual seat and there were hundreds of flowers all around. Our hearts and prayers are with her family and all of us who will miss her.

I met Ms. Papadopoulos in 1986. My daughter learned some Greek language with her who always sat her in her laps to talk. She got to meet all of my family. She was very sweet, and one of the friendliest person I ever met.
I will miss her and keep her memories in my heart.
God bless the family!

Mama P was always so sweet and we enjoyed her hugs as a weekly customer during the year we lived "just down the street" at Clairmont and North Druid Hills. Our younger daughter even had her wedding rehearsal dinner there. We will always remember Mapa P and her love. May the Comforter always bring your family sweet memories.

My children grew up on Athens Pizza. There was never ANY pizza to compare to it, and the chicken -lemon soup would always cure any illness! What a dear mother, friend and a person loved by all who knew her. She will be missed, but not forgotten. My prayers and thoughts are with you and Sandy at this time. We shall miss this great lady.

The mother of all mothers. She will be missed a lot, not just by her great family but the extended family she has created over the years, by her kindness, and love for everyone. The Cypriot students that came though Atlanta, know this very well. She was their mother away from home.
Margaret and I are very sad with her loss. She will be in our hearts and prayers. We will light a candle in her memory at the local church of Agia Paraskevi, at Nisou village in Cyprus where we live now.

Our thoughts go out to you. Going to Athens Pizza with our family reminded me of my Connecticut childhood home. I could only find perfect Greek food in Atlanta at Athens Pizza. Your Mom was a real lady. We will miss seeing her. The Williams

Thank you for so many pleasantries, always greeting me and my family. Your restaraunt was once my favorite, I went every Tuesday after Boy Scouts meetings. I wanted to thank you. Athens Pizza was unregrettably the reason I stayed in Scouts at one time (until I found joy in it). Now I am an Eagle Scout. I will have to go back one day. RIP
