A long time ago. Prom time at Basin Street East New York. Late 50s or very early 60s. On the bill with The Brothers Four and Nina Simone.
Fast forward to late 1965. Basin Street West. I was sitting at the bar in the back. Close to the end of the night. Club fairly empty, Back from a deployment to Hawaii. He invited me to come up front and enjoyed the rest of the evening.
Next day I saw him at the airport. Simply nodded in passing. No words needed be exchanged. A sequence of events I will remember for ever.
Mr. Brubeck, thank you for the music, thank you for the memories.

To: Mr. Dave Brubeck Family,
Memory can tell us only what we were,
In company with those we loved;
It cannot help us find out what each of us,
Alone, must now become.
Yet, no person is really alone;
Those who live no more still echo
Within our thoughts and words,
and what they did has become
Woven into what we are.
God Bless, and Bless America.
