Family-Placed Death Notice

HERMANN, George Joseph GEORGE JOSEPH HERMANN George Hermann passed away in his 91st year of life from a stroke. He was quite active and in good health until the stroke. Dr. Hermann resided in Decatur, Georgia, but was born in Owensboro Ky. on July 31, 1922. He was the son of John and Cecilia Hermann. He was the first of his family to attend college receiving his BS in bacteriology from the University of Kentucky. Between his junior and senior year his ROTC unit was called to active duty during WWII. He served as a 2Lt. in the 75 Infantry Division seeing action at the Battle of the Bulge and other locations in Belgium and Germany. After the war he returned to the University of Kentucky, where he met his wife Margaret, to finish his BS in bacteriology. He went on later in life to receive an MS from Brown University in bacteriology and a PhD from the University of North Carolina in laboratory science. They moved to Decatur where he began his career with the United States Public Health Service, working at the Centers for Disease Control. His work with enteric bacteria and the diphtheria bacillus resulted in improving diagnostic capabilities of public health labs throughout the US and internationally. He worked in his church as an usher and for the Saint Vincent DePaul Society, which serves the poor. George is survived by his son George Stephen Hermann; daughter Beverly Mangrum; grandson Paul Wardrip; granddaughters Lindsay Boseman and Kristin Goin; great grandson Luke Boseman; and great granddaughters Ada Boseman and Lane Goin. A service celebrating his life will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, November 7th at 10:30 am. The church is located at 2885 Briarcliff Rd NE Atlanta, GA 30329. The service will be followed by a reception in the church reception hall. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Saint Vincent DePaul Society.
