To the Sumlin Family:

My practice years (OB-Gyn) at Piedmont Hospital fortuitously overlapped several years during which Hulett Sumlin was the Administrator/CEO. As an executive, he was highly capable and effective, and as an individual he was kind and caring. His hearty laugh was often part of the equation. I am saddened by his death. I wish his family the very best.

Linda Lou,

Bill and I were distressed to learn of Hulett's death. We have fond memories of you from our childhood and Hulett from his days at Piedmont Hospital. Both of you have contributed greatly to our community. Bill wants you to know that, even 20 years later, many of the good things about the Piedmont Hospital of today are part of Hulett's legacy. Especially characteristic and invaluable were his frequent walks around the hospital to talk with patients, employees and physicians to find out how things could be improved. He was an outstanding hospital administrator and an all-around class act. This is a time of great sadness for you and your family, but you are all lucky to have so many memories of a wonderful man.

I worked at Piedmont from 1982-1990 and had the greatest respect for Mr. Sumlin. He was such a fine leader and cared about the employees. Even as the hospital grew, he remembered our names and asked about our families. My prayers are with you all. Kay NeSmith

My deepest sympathy to all of you. I am proud to have been associated with a
fellow Hospital CEO since 1956. We went through the Hospital Program at GSU in the late 50's and remained peers for over 50 years. He was highly respected in the Health Field,

I started at Piedmont Hospital as a 17 year old nursing student in 1976. Mr Sumlin had the capacity to make each and everyone of the employees at Piedmont feel as if they mattered to the organization. I remember being at work in the pediatrics department at 10 pm and Mr Sumlin would come walking into the nurses desk to ask me if I had what I needed to do my job. He also remembered my name after one introduction and would greet me be name when ever we passed. This is the kind of leadership that does not come around often. I am so sorry to hear of his passing and my prayers go out to his family. They have truly lost a great man, father and grandfather.

Linda Lou and Family,
I was so saddened to read about Mr. Sumlin's passing. Time just has a way of slipping by before we know it.
I remember my babysitting days with Andy and John when you lived on Woodley. Has it been that many
years? When I was expecting my first son, Taylor, I remember the time I was sitting on a sofa in the lobby of Piedmont when Mr. Sumlin came right over, knew me right away, and as he gracefully propt himself on the back of the sofa began chatting with me, in that elegant voice, as if I were a member of his family.
Years later, I had the pleasure of teaching at Northside Preschool with Linda Lou and Esther, and I'll never forget the time Linda Lou and her boys presented Mr. Sumlin, on his 60th birthday with something he had always wanted, (and I'm still wondering), whatever happened to that BIG RED truck? Just want you to know I'm thinking of you all.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

My sympathies to the Sumlin family. I was a hospital administration classmate of Hulett's in the 50's, and enjoyed our lively discussions with the profs, especially Dr. R.C. Williams. Huelett was a gentleman as well as a scholar.

Dear Sumlin Family:
Please accept the sincere and heartfelt condolences of The Piedmont Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association at this very difficult time of loss. Mr. Sumlin was always so supportive of the student body of The Piedmont Hospital School of Nursing and we are forever grateful for the vision and leadership of this kind and gentle man. He knew the students by name, the same as he did the employees of Piedmont Hospital. It was often said that Mr. Sumlin managed and directed by walking around! That he did... he was always visible in the halls, stairwells, and grounds of the hospital. He was interested in the patients, the staff, and the physicians. His style of leadership was appreciated more than he ever knew. We grieve with you at his sudden passing and count ourselves blessed to have known him, worked with him, and called him our friend. May God bless each one of you now and in the days to come. You will be in our prayers as we give thanks for the life and good works of Mr. Hulett Sumlin.
