Hubert Adams Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

ADAMS, Hubert HUBERT W. ADAMS Another member of the Great- est Generation has passed away. Hubert W. Adams, 87, of Stone Mountain, Georgia, died January 29, 2012 at his home. He was born April 15, 1924 near Montgomery, Alabama and was drafted into the United States Army one week after he graduated from Crenshaw County High School. He completed basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey and was assigned to the Army's Tugboat Corps as skipper of an eight-man tugboat crew. Stationed in Glasgow, Scotland as a 19-, 20- and 21-year-old, he spent World War II pulling materiel into place, ultimately in preparation for the D-Day invasion of Normandy, where he sat on his boat in a cove off the British coast and watched history unfold. He was a member of the U.S. Expeditionary Forces that landed at Le Havre, France in 1945, a mere three days after the invasion. After the conclusion of the war, he returned home to Alabama and on May 17, 1947 he married his childhood sweetheart, Jean Taylor, and 10 months later, on March 22, 1948, the first of their two children, Michael F. Adams (Mary Lynn Ethridge), now the president of the University of Georgia, was born. Marsha Adams Kelley (Jeff Kelley, senior partner with Troutman Sanders, LLP) was born on December 12, 1950. In June 1951 he moved the family to Atlanta to begin a 35-year career in retail sales with the Kraft Foods Company. While there were numerous other postings with the Kraft Company in the eastern United States, Atlanta has been the family home since 1951. He was part of the group, including J.L Kraft, which helped build Kraft into one of the world's largest and most profitable food companies. Mr. Adams retired as Retail Sales Manager for the Eastern Seaboard, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1996. After retirement, he and his wife returned to Stone Mountain, where they lived until her death on June 16, 2003 and his death on January 29, 2012. He was widely traveled and widely read, and was the recipient of numerous honors and held many leadership positions. One of the most highly prized recognitions was the J.L. Kraft Jade Award, the top service award presented by the company. He served multiple terms as president of the Tall Pines Homeowners' Association in Gwinnett County. For more than 30 years he was a Sunday School teacher and elder in the Atlanta Churches of Christ. In addition to his son and daughter, he is survived by six grandchildren – Julie Kelley McKinney of Canton, Georgia (Craig McKinney), David Winston Adams of Atlanta (Mary Paige Tucker), Anna Elizabeth Kelley of Atlanta, Stephen Taylor Adams of Chicago, Illinois (Carrie Olivia Ferguson), Adam Jeffrey Kelley of Atlanta (Radha Patel), and Grant Winston Kelley of Stone Mountain – and six great-grand-children – Ivy and Cole McKinney of Canton, Campbell and Tucker Adams of Atlanta, and Ashlyn and Aanya Kelley of Atlanta. Mr. Adams spent his retirement with a focus on family and service, both in his church and his community. He was widely known throughout the state for both his business expertise and his church and civic leadership. Included among those are the Greater Atlanta Christian Schools with Dr. Jesse Long; the Hispanic Senior Advising Corps, through which he tutored dozens of Hispanic high school students; and the area Churches of Christ. He retraced his wartime travels with trips back to England, Scotland and France, and also traveled in Germany and Austria, but he often said that his greatest trip was to the Holy Land, a retirement gift from his family. A loyal Bulldog fan for more than 50 years, it was his great surprise in the summer of 1997 to find television and radio trucks parked outside his house when the news leaked that his son was to be the next president of the University of Georgia – a secret that Dr. Adams had kept from his father and mother on orders from the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. In retirement, he attended hundreds of UGA sporting events, always with one of the best seats in the house. The family will receive visitors on Wednesday evening, February 1, from 5-7 p.m. at the Tom Wages Funeral Home in Snellville. Christian services in his honor will be conducted Thursday, February 2, at 11 a.m. at Wages, with interment to follow at Eternal Hills Cemetery, Snellville, beside his wife of 56 years. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Jean and Hubert Adams Memorial Fund, Greater Atlanta Christian Schools, 1575 Indian Trail Road, Norcross, Georgia 30093. Condolences may be viewed or sent to www.wagesfuneralhome.com. Tom M. Wages Funeral Service, LLC, "A Family Company" Snellville Chapel 770-979-3200, has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.

Memories and Condolences
for Hubert Adams

Not sure what to say?

We knew Hubert, Jean and family through church in Raleigh, NC, Charlotte, NC and Atlanta, GA. He was a fine Christian man and has received his heavenly reward. We so enjoyed times with Hubert and Jean...they were the "cool" older folks at church. Our condolences to you Mike and Marsha and your families.

Hubert was a kind man who will be missed by many. Our dad, Derrell, thought the world of him and often mentioned how much he enjoyed their golf games and fellowship. Our deepest sympathies and know that our prayers are with you at this time.
