John DeVORE Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

DeVORE, John COACH JOHN DeVORE The passing of Coach John DeVore has left a void in the coaching of baseball. Coach DeVore passed away January 12th after an extended illness. John was the son of the late Fred and Lala DeVore of Crabapple, Ga. He is survived by his wife of (46) years, Fayron Savelle DeVore, his son, Dusty DeVore, his granddaughter, Taylor DeVore, three sisters, Juanita Matthews of Blanchard, La, Ann Austin of Alpharetta, Ga., Sarah and Ralph Rucker of Alpharetta, and a number of close nieces and nephews. John attended West Ga. College (now the University of West Georgia) in 1962-1965 where he pitched for the West Georgia Braves. He was All-American in 1964 & 1965. He later became one of the first inductees into the West Ga. Hall of Fame and later inducted into the Georgia High School Hall of Fame. John signed with the Mets Class A after college but , as he said, "I didn't throw hard but I threw strikes. You know how the pros are; they like guys who throw hard." He was released due to injury but went on to teach and coach in DeKalb County for 30 years where he became one of the winningest coaches to date with a 377-232 record. He coached at Southwest DeKalb until 1980 and then went to Shamrock High School where he was named their Teacher of the Year. He retired in 1996. At his retirement, DeKalb County honored him with the naming of the John DeVore Field at Druid Hills Middle School. ..then Shamrock High School. Coach DeVore was an instructor at the Georgia Tech Pitcher Catcher camp for 20 years. He was renowned for building baseball fields. He built SWD's first baseball field and made Shamrock's facility the county's best. He once stated, "A field can even help a team, because kids seem to play better and take more pride when playing on a good field." Coach Devore's players knew that he was their friend, but not their buddy, that he would do what he could to help. He never lacked respect, not only from players, but from other coaches as well. He loved coaching, but his love of teaching and helping kids was his first priority. He has had over a hundred of his players go to college or the pros, not counting kids from other schools that he helped. On January 12, 2012 John DeVore was in the bottom of the ninth and won the ultimate game. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The University of West GA Baseball program or the GA Dugout Club. Visitation, Monday, January 14, 5:00PM - 7:30PM at 34 Church St., Alpharetta, GA 30004 (The DeVore House Reception & Banquet Hall). The memorial service will be Tuesday, January 15, 2:00PM at Northside Chapel at 1205 Cranapple Rd., Roswell, GA 30075.

Memories and Condolences
for John DeVORE

Not sure what to say?

We are sorry to have learned of Coach DeVore's passing only recently, missing the funeral. Coach Devore would be proud of his 2 students of the Lively family, both of whom have gone on to pitch in college. His knowledge and wisdom in helping them will be remembered for a lifetime by my boys. I am sure they are not the only ones who will remember his teachings, but all those who had the pleasure of learning baseball from him. I'm sure God got himself a great pitching coach. R.I.P. John

Coach D...It was such an honor to be coached by the best. You taught me so much in the few years we had the softball program. You were an amazing person, coach, and mentor. I know that you would want to know that I'm instilling the skills that I learned from you into my daughter and so your coaching still continues, and that is a great way for me to remember you.

The Jackson Family was so sorry to hear about the passing of Coach DeVore. He was truly a great person and pitching coach who inspired many who had the chance to know him. My son Will worked with Coach DeVore who is also a RHP and they both bonded well together while throwing a bullpen. Will always told me he felt great after throwing a bullpen with Coach DeVore and how much he learned from his lesson. My son Will is going to pitch for Georgia College and we are grateful for the instruction we received and the positive comments Coach DeVore delivered. Coach DeVore will truly be missed!

Prayers to the Devore Family for your loss and may GOD Bless,

I was lucky enough to have received lessons from Coach Devore when I was only 13. Although it has been many years since my last lesson with him, his knowledge of the game guided me throughout my career in baseball and still remains with me today. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing and I consider myself truly blessed to have known such a great man. I only hope that I can pass on to my students the things that Coach Devore taught me. He will be deeply missed and our prayers are with your family.

I had the rare privilege of being a student and player and later a fellow teacher and coach with coach Devore.. He was always teaching coaching, and mentoring 24 hours a day. When my son became 12 and playing ball . I drove up from Brunswick and he gave him pitching lessons later on in high school I called him every spring for advice. Coach Devore had an open door policy you could talk to him any time. He taught me work ethic and pride in what your doing . He taught me how to be a better man. I'll always love coach Devore. Mrs Devore I'm truly saddened for your loss but he loved you and dusty very much because thats all he ever talked about. Love Scott Morrison

I only today learned of John's passing. Am truly sorry to hear of this - remember him and you when he was playing ball with Coach Tom D'Armi at West GA College and the visits he and his coach and other team members made to our house in Atlanta. My dad always thought that John was one of the best ball players he had ever seen. Dad always enjoyed umpiring when he knew John was pitching. Know that they are having a conversation and remembering all their fond times, games and friends. Will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers at this time.

I just recently heard of Coach DeVore's passing, all I can say is the world has lost one of the best and genuine people ever; however, heaven has gained a true angel. I had the honor of having Coach DeVore as my 8th grade GA history teacher at Shamrock High School in '91. On that very first day he gave all of us a card (a card I believe he gave to all his new students). "Success is determined by the amount of work you put into it." and "Give Life 105%." I have managed to keep that card in my wallet for 22 years. Of course wallets have come and gone, but that card was always the first thing to be transferred into the new wallet. I can honestly say I don't think there was one teacher that had as much of an impact on generations of kids as Coach DeVore did. From his love of teaching to his love of coaching, he was a great man! I will happily pass on his wisdom (the card) to my son. So sorry for your loss. You all are in our prayers.

So sorry to hear of this loss today. My son was fortunate to receive pitching instruction from Coach Devore. Yes, he was a bit "crusty" and awesome all at the same time--he knew baseball and expected 110% from everyone. Deepest sympathy to the Devore family.

To the Devore family, Coach Devore made such an impact on everyone that met him. I had moved to Georgia just a year prior to being taught Georgia History by Coach Devore. He was insistent that I learn as much as possible about the state during the time I had him as a teacher at SHS. Only once did I try to take a nap during his class. I was woke up by a 50mph eraser. LOL Coach Devore was a great teacher.

Enjoyed the service today. What a great legacy left by coach DeVore. I never had him as a teacher but wound up as his assistant and babysat Dusty. He was a warm, kind person who molded so many young boys into good men. We will all miss you and look forward to reuniting with you in heaven.

All the best to Fayron and Dusty, thanks for sharing him!

I had the pleasure of attending one of his Social Studies classes at SWD and later the honor of playing baseball for him my senior year. I will never forget all the rocks we removed from his baseball field. He and my father cooked up the idea of selling Christmas Trees as a fund raiser for the baseball team. I'm sure all the guys on the team remember working that tree lot. I got to see John at some of our past SWD class reunions. He was always a pleasure to see and speak with. He was a great guy and will truly be missed. Our prayers go out to his family.

The Baseball World has lost a great treasure of a coach. John Devore was the best of the best as a Dekalb County Baseball Coach. John and I had many phone conversations over the years of coaching against one another. He always had something good to say about you and if you were down, he knew how to pick you back up! John had a lot of pride in his baseball teams, his baseball fields, and as a lot of folks knew he had great integrity. My heartfelt sympathies go out to Mrs. Devore, Dusty, and the entire Devore family. I know that as a coach's wife and a coach's son, there were a lot of sacrifices to be made over the years. Thank you for sharing John with all of us. I will truly miss him!

Coach had a fun class for Ga History - which says a lot since History was NOT my favorite subject! I graduated in '73 from SWD and saw him at the baseball Christmas tree sale several years later. Mrs.Devore and Dusty, I am sorry for your loss. He was a great man, a very kind and giving man. I had the privledge of being at SWD and being mentored by Coach DeVore. I will never forget the things I learned about baseball, and also about life and giving 105%. I guess when I first met him, I was in awe. However, over our 5 years together he taught me that every man put his pants on one leg at a time and not to be afraid to compete with anyone and just always do my best.
I'll never forget my sophomore year he bought me a glove and broke it in for me. He said that now that I had the proper equipment I should never make another error. My junior year he bought me a pair of Kangaroo hide cleats, he told me I was the first person in the state with a pair.
He made such a diffrence in so many lives, He will be missed.

My Thoughts and Prayers for Coach DaVore's Family. Back in '78-'79 he taught me History in the 8th grade and I was a manager for SWD baseball team that year - until I got stupid and quit. I turned in my cap and jacket. He later walked up to me and gave them back. I still have the cap. Back then if you got in trouble in school you might end up picking up rocks off his field. We have lost one of the all time greats of Dekalb County Athletics.

Fayron and Dusty, I want to tell you how sorry I am to hear about Coach passing. I pray you both find peace knowing that Coach is in heaven. He was my football and baseball coach for 5 yrs. at SWD. He taught us all to work hard to be the best we could be and to not hold back, but to leave it all on the field. But the most important things he taught me were life lessons. He was always there for me whenever I had questions or just needed someone to listen and for that I'm forever grateful. I love ya, COACH!!! I was a young 23 year old Baseball Caoch when I met Coach DeVore in 1977. He was always available with a quick tip, insight or suggestion. His passion for kids and the game of baseball was truly remarkable. I will miss him and high school baseball will miss him more.

Fayron and Dusty,
May you find peace and contentment from the outpouring of love for John from the many people--former players, students, coaches, and friends--expressed since the sad news of his passing on January 12, 2013. I had the great joy of working with Coach DeVore at Southwest Dekalb from 1972 to 1979. He and I were on the football staff with Coach Dewey Alverson and I also served as his baseball assistant. I do have my fondest memories of him on the baseball diamond, including the great pride he always took in his fields.

Fayron,Dusty; I am so sorry for your loss. As you know I last saw Coach DeVore on Dec 15th 2012 at our 40th High school State Football Championship reunion. I knew Coach DeVore had been sick and what an extreme effort it was on the family's part to get him there, but when he entered the room our eyes connected and his face lit up with that unique smile he always had and it just brought tears to my eyes as I went over to hug him. I personally was priviledged to have had him coach me from the 8th grade thru the 12th at SWD. He will always be remembered by me not only as a great coach but more importantly someone who taught me the GAME OF LIFE. Thoughts and prayers to your family. Jucky Burns SWD Class of 1974.

We were lucky to have Coach DeVore come to Shamrock in 1981. He taught us how to win and look like a baseball team in the process. Black spikes and the cap pulled down the way it was meant to be! Our field looked great, too. He made us take pride in ourselves and the wins soon followed. It's rare that Coach DeVore doesn't come up when old friends get together. What a tribute 30 years later.

Coach John Devore was my teacher, coach, father figure, friend and one of my two heroes in my life. I would not be where I am today if it was not for him. Coach DeVore was a factor in my going to college at all. As a small town pitcher, related to "Johnnie" by marriage, he gave me some invaluable guidance on my techniques, improving my skills considerably. By the time I finished high school, I was good enough to pitch in college, finally pitching for West Georgia - a life-long dream of mine. Thanks, Coach Johnnie! You will be missed!

When I played for Tucker in the spring of '86 & '87, we always played Shamrock at their field because it was so nice. Even though I did not know him personally in high school, I had such respect for Coach Devore. To some of us, he was like the Bear Bryant of DeKalb County baseball.

I got to know John personally as an adult. He ran a clinic for my baseball team last February. For those of you who had not seen Coach Devore since high school, he was as good now as he was then. He had eleven 14-year-olds eating out of his hand.

He will be missed.

John and I were close friends. We coached together at SWD. He and Fayron were also my neighbors. As many have already said, John was a great teacher as well as a great coach. I have many fond memories of this great man, and coach. Getting the honor to become a catcher and learn the art of pitching from another angle...including Mazzone pitching camps at The Ball Park after he retired from the school system. And in the lessons of baseball he taught me great lessons on life...mainly patience, perseverence (in baseball you can fail 7 out of 10 times and be a hall of famer)...and giving it my best "if you're gonna be a garbage man, be the best garbage man."... it still turns my stomach when i see the red dugouts on John Devore Field, BUT I had the honor of scoring the final run of SHS for this amazing man. he gave me the LOVE for baseball that continues to this day...and i can't say thank you enough.

Coach DeVore - thanks for everything you did for so many young men and women!
I personally was privileged to have had Coach DeVore as my d-backs coach and baseball coach. I will remember him most for how he always challenged me to be the very best player that I could be. Because of men like John DeVore, I embarked on a career coaching high school baseball and teaching science. Thanks again for sharing your life with with so many young people!

I think I speak for everyone who had the privilege to play for and to know as a person that Coach DeVore in some way touched all of us. Coach DeVore will be remembered by me not only as a great coach but also by the number of young players and students that he helped mold into the men and women we are today. Rest in peace!

What a good man Coach Devore was - a man of integrity and class! I was fortunate to know him when our son (Kevin) played for Coach at Shamrock High School. I cherish the special memories of our being able to name the baseball field in his honor AND also of being there for the very last baseball game ever as Shamrock High beat Tucker High.

Thoughtout our lives, special people ae placed by God to assist our own growth. I give thanks that Coach Devore was there not only for my son but for all of us who came into contact with him.
