I just learned now of Keone's death. I don't know what to say. After his life and death battle with sickle cell and the miracle of the stem cell transplant... his journey to culinary school, and then his tragic death. He will always remain a hero to me and to my students. Every year I would show the clip from 60 MINUTES to my students. We all loved seeing Keone as such a strong fighter. I will always remember Keone as being tough (as he told Carol Marin), and being an amazing human being and a pioneer. I would like to think that he is up in the clouds, making the most amazing of culinary delights, forever and ever.

My son was named after Keone. I never meet him, but heard wonderful things about him. My sons family is very close with family.

Keone Penn. When you went through your cord blood transplant as a young boy you taught us a lesson in courage and strength. When you-now cured of sickle cell anemia- spoke to government officials in the new millennium about your story and urged them to allow the continuation of stem cell research you demonstrated the wisdom of a much older person with deep compassion for others. From that first day in 1998 when I heard of your transplant while listening to NPR until now I have been telling my student's about you. In a few days I will have another group of students and I will tell them about you –but today I am praying for your family.

May your memories of your precious Keone bring you a measure of peace in the days to come. In a quiet moment, steal away and take note of a special moment between a mother and her son. Luke 7:11-15. Hoping you find comfort.
