Im just learning of Mrs Humphress'passing and am very sad to hear it. She was such an awesome teacher and one of a kind. Also I remember her contagious laugh, her movement around the classroom was like a waltz and her long stride walking through the halls.
Spent time in between and after class playing Barbara Streisand records including Funny Girl. She took great interest in her students and kept her students interested and entertained.
She could have easily been a stand up comic...
Seeing the MKH initials in the above beautifully written tribute reminds me of her embroidered initials on her bags.
Please accept my belated condolences and prayers to her loving family and close friends.

I was a student when she was just developing the Gifted and Talented program. MKH had such a quick wit and love of life. The Canterbury Tales came alive in her classroom. What a grand southern lady!

A life of giving selflessly is one that is remembered with fondness. Many applaud the excellent way she counted her days while with us and there is a mixture of sad/glad that only individual memories can express.Tributes and condolences for a remarkable presence. Psalms 90:12.

Shane and I loved Mary Kay. One of our favorite church members. We loved being in Bible Study with her and having her humor, mostly wonderfully inappropriate, add spice and flavor to our lives. We have missed her so much since she moved, but I know she loved spending her last years with her family who she loved and adored. Our thoughts and prayers are with them, the world just lost a very bright and funny light.

What a wonderful gift Mary Kay and Willard's friendship was to Bob and me. We shared so many wonderful times together and the bad times were shared with Mary Kay's strength and humor. We were kindred souls who made so many good memories in our youth and then in our old age. She will be greatly missed by so many of us. Our family sends love to her family who meant so much to her. I know for sure one thing, Heaven has gained another humorist who will have no peer.

I was so blessed to have worked with
Mary Kay at Tucker High School. She was such a unique person & a devoted teacher. I would often go by her classes to hear "pearls of wisdom" & joyful laughter pouring into the hall. Her students adored her as did all of our faculty. No one could turn a boring faculty meeting into a comedy show with a such ease! What a jewel she was & how lucky we all were to have been in her presence.

Dr. Humphress was one of those rare teachers who truly cared about her students and wanted to make sure that they learned not only to write, but also to think critically. I can still hear her saying to our 11th grade Impact English class at THS, "Write like an educated person and not like a mo-ron!" She told it like it was and we need more teachers like her.

My deepest sympathy to Sydney Chalfa and family on the passing of your loved one. Although I never met her, Sydney, your mother sounds delightful. I can tell that her beautiful legacy not only lives on through the many students she influenced but also within her daughter, Sydney, who I do know. Take comfort in knowing that her spirit survives and you all will forever be reminded of the wonderful gifts she so lovingly shared.

Time passes much too fast... and this lady was a great teacher and loved to laugh. She will be missed! I attended Tucker from 1973 to 1977. She taught Art of the film where we students used an 8mm or supper 8mm movie film camera, planned our film, developed the film, edited it, and then showed our work with the rest of the class... she had as much fun as we did and she loved each and every student. She loved reading Samuel Clemens and other such authors. She was always uplifting... Don't be sad, be glad your life was blessed by her... See you one day in Heaven Mrs. H, but not too soon :-)

My mentor during all my years at Tucker High School, Dr. Humphress was an amazing person. She expected only the best from us and generally got it. At the same time, she encouraged us to explore our own identities. In eighth grade, she praised my originality when I opened my paper on euthanasia with a quote from a Star Trek novel and listened with tolerant amusement to a book report on The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (not mine). Later, she put up with the shenanigans of the literary magazine staff as we put out the Seniors' Last Wills and Testaments, and she went to bat for us when we wanted the budget to make a color cover for the magazine. In my junior year, Dr. Humphress made To Kill a Mockingbird come alive with stories of her own childhood, so much so that I still hear her voice in my head sometimes when I read it. Most of all, she pushed us, she cared about us, and she knew better than we did what we were capable of achieving and did not let us get by with less than that. There is so much more to mention her wicked sense of humor, her well-known determination not to let the newfangled dot-matrix tractor-feed printer get the best of her, her accidental slip of the tongue with a certain work by Flannery O'Connor, but I will simply say, Dr. Humphress, thank you and I hope we've made you proud.
