Scott DAWKINS Obituary

DAWKINS, Scott Atlanta attorney Scott William Dawkins passed away unexpectedly on May 30, 2014. Scott was an Atlanta native, and a graduate of The Lovett School, class of 1994. At Lovett, he participated in several sports, including basketball and track. He graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. After graduation, Scott volunteered for AmeriCorps in a shelter for at-risk youth in San Jose, California. Scott graduated from The Emory University School of Law with a Juris Doctorate degree in 2004. Scott practiced law in Atlanta since 2004, focusing on helping those in need, with a special emphasis on criminal defense. He worked as a Public Defender for DeKalb, Fulton and Clayton Counties. Scott also worked in the Conflict Resolution Office in Fulton County. He then operated his own successful private law practice. Scott's character was best exemplified by his kindness and an abiding love for family and friends. He possessed a genuine, unpretentious, laid-back spirit, and was a popular personality known for his selfless nature and keen sense of humor. Scott was highly intelligent, and intellectually curious, as demonstrated by his constant efforts to learn from his extensive travels; he consistently strived to help those he met from all walks of life. He particularly enjoyed spending time with family and friends, as evidenced by his passion for attending sporting events with them, especially enjoying the Atlanta Hawks and Falcons, the Florida State Seminoles and the Vanderbilt Commodores. Scott is survived by his father, Atlanta attorney William J. Dawkins, his mother, Atlanta resident Susan L. Dawkins, and his brother, Connecticut resident Jeffrey E. Dawkins, as well as his sister in law Sarah L. Dawkins, his nephew Lucas E. Dawkins and niece Scarlett M. Dawkins. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2014 at 3:00pm at H. M. Patterson & Son Arlington Chapel at 173 Allen Road, N.E., Sandy Springs, Georgia 30328, 404.851.9900. Visitors will be received starting at 2:00pm at the funeral home. Following the service, a reception will be held at a venue that will be announced at the service.

Scott wasn't just a great attorney; he was a great guy, warm and compassionate and always put others first. I had the honor of being his trial partner several years ago when he was a public defender and got to know him then. Scott always made you smile. He'll be missed, doubtless.
