Winifred Sutherland Obituary

Ever the talented woman, Winifred "Nina" Sutherland danced and stitched her way into the hearts of those who loved her.
Growing up in Surrey, England, during World War II she spent many nights of her adolescence in a backyard bomb shelter. Later, she was drafted into the British Women's Auxiliary Air Force as a "plotter" in Northern Ireland, keeping track of airplanes.
She trained in the 1930s as a seamstress in a shop off London's Bond Street, historically known for its expensive boutiques and antique shops. And she loved to dance. In fact, she met her husband, the late Jack Sutherland, an American, at a mixer in England toward the end of the war.
They wed and moved to Oak Ridge, Tenn., in 1947, living on the site of the Atomic Energy Commission research laboratory. Sutherland arrived in Decatur in 1962, with her husband and their two children. She lived in the same Decatur house for the next 52 years.
Sutherland died Aug. 9 at Hospice Atlanta from complications of congestive heart failure.Read the news obituary.

I only wish we asked all the questions we would like to know the answers to while people were still here to answer them, and not realise all the questions we have after they leave us. I have so many things I would like to ask Nina and learn about her life. A dear lady I only met once but had the fortune to correspond with on a regular basis, and have many photos and handmade gifts she sent over the course of my life with her letters, that I will always hold dear. I will miss you Nina. Love from Danielle Gavin Amelie and Summer xxx

I never met my Aunt Nina (my mothers sister) as she lived on the other side of the big pond. But to me she was a very special person and I will always remember her for her kindness.
I shared some of here later life through her son, my cousin Mike who tended to her needs right to the end. Nina I hope you have taken your rightful place up with the angels. God bless you.
