Joseph Wallace McCann, 88 of Guthrie Center was born Dec. 7, 1926, near Woodbine, son of Leslie and Alice (Reed) McCann. Joe passed away Sept. 29, 2015 at the Exira Care Center where he had lived since December 2013. He grew up on the family farm with brothers; John (Bud), Dean and Bill, sisters; Ellen and Connie, and attended school in Woodbine. After high school he was a farm worker until joining the Army in January 1951 where he served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in November 1952.
Joe married Doris Dimick of Guthrie Center on Oct. 20, 1952 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Guthrie Center. They were married for 56 years until her death in 2008. Joe farmed around Exira and Audubon, and moved to the farm west of Guthrie Center in 1965 where he farmed until 2010.
Joe and Doris were members of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Guthrie Center and he was active in the Knights of Columbus for many years. The couple enjoyed a card club near Exira, square dancing, and he had a volleyball court in the yard where neighbors came to play and socialize on summer evenings. Most of all Joe enjoyed being a farmer, working and caring for the land.
In addition to his wife, Doris, he was preceded in death by his son Richard.
Joe is survived by son Randy and his wife Sheri of Guthrie Center, grandchildren; Lori (Chris) McGinnis of Des Moines, Keith (Chantelle) McCann of Menlo, Kevin (Debora) McCann of Anita, Kylie McCann and Emily McCann of Guthrie Center, his great-grandchildren Garrett, Peyton, Emery, Shayna and Cohen, Jane McCann of Anita, Laura Kral of Van Meter; sister-in-law Ruby Jones of Atlantic along with several cousins, nieces and nephews.
