AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mr. Harold Martin Boardman, Jr., an Augusta native, entered into rest on Friday, September 27, 2013 at Trinity Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Carol Elizabeth Boardman. He is preceded in death by his parents: Harold, Sr. and Anna Dunbar Boardman; brothers: Barney and Donald Boardman; son: Harold III; and daughter: Anna Dunbar Boardman II. He attended William Robinson School, Bolles Academy, Jacksonville, FL; Augusta College, and University of Florida where he studied architecture and design. In 1943, Mr. Boardman joined the Naval Air Corp and was stationed at Jacksonville Naval Air Station. He served as flight engineer in WWII in Hawaii and the Philippines from 1944-45 where he saw action as a member of Squadron 104 flying as gunner. To quote his Commanding officer in reference to the Squadron: "These men who at no time hesitated or stumbled or complained or criticized; who continually with their heart and soul, stamina and humor, and their very existence, performed a job which was neither of their asking nor their liking; a job which was difficult and at time loathsome; a job which demanded everything and which by all was well done done far above and beyond what any individual could have expected." After his time in the Philippines, Mr. Boardman was sent to Edenington, NC in 1945 and remained there until honorably discharged in 1947. Upon his return to Augusta, Mr. Boardman worked for his father at Boardman Oil Company. He and his father then purchased the Studebaker Automobile dealership which he ran from 1947-58. During this period, he began his career in construction, developing residential and commercial properties. He moved to Coral Gables, FL in 1958 where he continued to develop projects. Mr. Boardman returned to Augusta in 1963 and began projects that include Montrose Court and Murray Hills, in addition to residential and commercial developments in South Augusta. It was at this time that he and his partners built Goshen Plantation and Golf Course. In 1969, he moved to Hilton Head Island, SC and continued to develop properties in Sea Pines Plantation. Upon the death of his parents, he returned to Augusta, where he resided until his death. Mr. Boardman was a member of the Augusta Country Club, former member of Grandfather Golf and Country Club in Linville, NC, and a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd. He was a former member of the Home Builders and Real Estate Associations, Automobile Association and Oilmen's Association. His pilot associations include the Bahama Flying Club and Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He was a former member of the Richmond Associates Investment Club. In addition to his wife, Carol, he is survived by daughters: Madeline B. Manning, Brooke B. Rhodes of Augusta; step-daughters: Dr. Lauren E Linn of Stratford, CT, Mary Fay Videon of Augusta; devoted grandson, Waylon Cawley of Augusta; 6 additional grandchildren of Augusta; 4 great-grandchildren; 1 step-grandchild, and all of his loving Boardman family. In his retirement years, Mr. Boardman enjoyed traveling with his wife Carol throughout Europe, England, Scandinavia, cruising the Baltic Sea, the Caribbean and Mediterranean, Canada, and exploring the United States. His hobby was golfing with his friends in Augusta and North Carolina. He was a voracious reader. Special thanks to: Sr. Clara Vincent, Dr. Wm Neumann, Dr. Brent Limbaugh, Dr. Fred Rosenblum, and the staff in ICU at Trinity Hospital. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM at Summerville Cemetery on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 with The Rev. Robert D. Fain, The Rev. Lynn B. To the Harold Boardman, Jr. Family:
Just want to say that I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Boardman. I did not know him personally, but I have heard my Dad, Jimmy Lee Widener and my Brother, Audley Widener, from Graniteville, speak so fondly of Mr. Boardman. They worked with him in Augusta for several years and enjoyed his friendship. Our love and prayers are with all of you.
