Sandman, I just found out about your entering the gates of larger life. I knew something was up when I missed my Christmas card this past year and your phone was disconnected. I ask several people what was going on, but never got a satisfactory answer. You taught me all that I know about journalism, layout and headline writing. But my joy became complete when I knew that you had recaptured your faith. Stars and Stripes forever as you lead Arnie's Army. Will never forget Mr. Brown's obit on the front page and we apologized later. He was a newspaperman. I love you Sandy and I am forever grateful for your friendship. May God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ hold you in their arms forever. I pray that I will soon see you in God's time. You need to look up Anna Estelle, my wife, you would absolutely love her wry sense of humor, but have her cook her Greek-style chicken. Did I ever tell you that after putting the paper to bed, that she always had a hot meal waiting on me. Awesome! See you soon and we can enjoy breakfast together.

Sandman you were one of a kind and you will be missed by many. You were always a great friend to my father Donnie Harris and our family. Sending my condolences to your family and friends.

A one-of-a-kind, quirky, talented newspaperman he appeared to a young reporter new to The Augusta Chronicle newsroom in 1964. The years confirmed what I saw early on: Sandman was one of the best copy editors and headline crafters I have ever known. Rest in peace, my friend. You've met your final deadline.

The Sandman was a friend and a great lunch partner. A conversation with Johnny was a lesson in sports history. He had the best memory of anyone I have known.
