Such a celestial display of shooting stars last weekend, calling one of their own homeward. Dr. Paul Mahoney was one of those rare, rare souls who found joy and levity everywhere, even in the dark trenches of war and medicine. He held court at many a lunch table, regaling us with hilarious jokes and tall tales, usually involving golf or his time in the Far East ("Doc,she told me she was the Queen of Thailand"...)
All bonhomie aside, he was a skilled anesthesiologist. I have vivid memories of an evening years ago, when he mercifully sent me to the Land of Nod during a difficult childbirth, and for my unfettered gratitude, woke me up again!
"So,Paul, if yer listenin',remember that you were a fine laddie, and we'll sorely miss ye. Raise a wee dram with all the old friends you've joined. As for the rest of us, if we are very lucky, perhaps one day we will sit at your table again."
