I have wanted to contact Mr. Wood ever since reading the article about him online a few months ago, (published in the Augusta Chronicle in 2010.) I found this article while conducting geanealogical research on his parents. His father was a distant cousin to me, and his mother was my very first school teacher (in 1958.)

Every day of my life I owe something to his mother, Lucile. Having her as my teacher was an absolute blessing, and she was so good to me.

I wanted to tell Truett how much Lucile meant to me, and I was thrilled to see she and Gaither had a surviving son in GA. I regret that I was not able to contact him, but I want to tell the family that I know Truett was an exceptionally special gentleman.

May God bless the family always. The Wood family was a real blessing to me.

I had the honor to meet your dad when he and Tony joined us for a trip back to Iwo Jima, Saipan and Tinian. It was a joy and honor for me to have had the opportunity to know him. He was a kind and loving man to all. I loved the time after that trip that I got to see him. I am so glad that he got his MCL Devil Dog collar that he so wanted. Cindy - we talked several times on the phone and I am sorry that we never met. My thoughts are with you and your sister during this time. I thought of your dad the whole time I in Korea - his detachment notified me in Korea of his passing. It again was my honor to meet such a wonderful man who gave all for his country and family. He will truely be missed by all but NEVER FORGOTTEN!

Cindy and Susan,

This Bill Russell, you probably remember me as "Punk". I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Our Dads had some memorable times together over the years and are now together again. Bill and Gene have both passed away over the past four years as well. My heart prayers are with the two of you. Your Mom and Dad were special folks to so many.
