My condolences to the Carew family and regret that I find out about John's passing while trying to look him up to say HI.
I worked with John at Merchants Bank while going to college. John was just a wonderful friend and I completely enjoyed his company. Many of the world's problems were solved back in those days at Wards Place. He loved a recipe I gave him from my mother for Salmon Croquettes, and never missed an opportunity to rave about them. I take some slight comfort that he can now get ALL my mother's recipes including the ones she wouldn't give us. RIP.

My brother John was my best buddy! I will miss our weekly trips to Sam's Club and Woodman Market (which always included lunch). He was my go to handyman and mentor. I remember working at Galena Food Store with John when all the Carew men worked there in the 70's. He would be running the checkout and taking home delivery phone orders while I swept the floors and bagged groceries.
We would always ask each other what we were cooking for the weekend as John loved to cook. John would often show up knocking at the back door with homemade vegetable soup or grilled leg of lamb cooked on his beloved "Bubba" He often would find a great recipe and share it with me.
But the thing I will miss the most will be talking to John on a daily basis. We would share the news of the day and listen to each other's problems. John would say to me "Well doctor".... then unload his vent up frustrations followed with "be sure to send me my bill" and I would do the same. He would talk to me on the phone until I would say "talk to you tomorrow" bye. Birthdays, holidays and everyday will never be the same.
John was a great brother and my best friend.

It has taken me so very long to chose my favorite memory of Uncle John, because there are so many. I will never forget his love of tradition and the many traditions that he started. I especially enjoyed the Fourth of July both the cookout by the real lake, and watching fireworks on John’s lake. I will also always remember singing Christmas carols together with children toys while John played the piano. But the most meaningful memory and one of the most recent memories I have of John is the day that he gave me many mini crystal figurines. He explained that now that I am all grown up (as I was the youngest in the line of Carew nieces and nephews) and was moving into my own place (although it’s an apartment in a residence hall) it was time for me to have some crystal. This touched my heart in a special way, especially now that he is gone. While, I do not feel grown-up in many ways, I know that Uncle John was very proud of me and was always there to support me.
John was a very inspirational man and taught me many things. I miss him dearly.

I didn't know John for very long, but he certainly made me feel a part of the family. My favorite memories of John are all the times we got together! And most of those times involved some sort of big meal, like the huge feast of pulled pork that John was up all night cooking. He was a wonderful cook, and he was such a pleasure to talk to. He had great stories, and fantastic food, and he always made you smile. I will really miss John and all the happiness and love he brought to the Carew Family.
