Dear Basha Family,
I have so many wonderful memories of Eddie. I first met Eddie while I was teaching in Chandler at Denver Elementary School (now San Marcos Elem) with Nadine. Eddie was on the Chandler School Board. He was always interested in helping others and working together to create a better community and state for ALL who lived there. Eddie was genuine, compassionate and generous. He was a blessing to everyone who knew him. My first year teaching, my 3rd graders wrote letters to Santa. One girl asked Santa for a bed that she and her sister could sleep on, as they were currently sleeping on the floor. I asked Eddie if there was a merchant in Chandler who would fulfill this wish. He immediately called a local furniture store, purchased a bunk bed and had it delivered from Santa on Christmas Eve. He wanted no recognition but rather was just happy to get the girls a bed in which to sleep. There are thousands of us who have wonderful memories of Eddie's compassion and actions to make life a little better for others. I'm saddened for our loss and for your family's great loss. May you all find comfort in the outpouring of love from all of us who were touched in one way or another by Eddie's compassion and generosity. Peace and blessings be with you all.
Fondly,
Christine Pennington Anderson

I'll always be grateful for Eddie Basha, both as a person and as a leader of Chandler Unified School's board. As per a suggestion in the Tucson Daily Star letters to the editor I bought groceries at Bashas and donated them to our local food bank in his memory. Mary Wilson, retired librarian, Erie Elementary

To the entire Basha Family -
May God be with you in this time of such great loss. Eddie was a dear friend from the third grade up he was even my best man when I go married in 1958. He has been such a gift to the state of Arizona and all his friends. I know of nothing Eddie would not do for you if you were in need. The High School Reunions he put on for the CHS classes of 54-55- & 56 gave us all a chance to keep in touch with not only Eddie but all our high school friends. Memories of Eddie will remain with me for life. I will miss those crazy phone calls. He truly was the very BEST and Arizona will never be able to replace him and neither will his friends. I am so glad he was a big part of my life growing up and he will be missed by all of us.
Go in peace Eddie we all loved you.

Eddie was a one of a kind person with a rare zest for a life of helping others. The way he talked to you always made you feel as if you were the most important person in the room, even when you knew you absolutely were not. He seemed as interested in knowing how my business was as he did with talking to someone he just met about their experience in one of his stores, or an elected official relating to some very important legislation. I deeply admire Eddie for his continual desire to innovate - in his business and in public policy. Eddie we will all miss you so much. Az is such a better place for having you here.

To Eddie's family. I want you to know I always admired Eddie. He was a very special classmate. I know how much he cared about education, and as a teacher, I always appreciated that fact. I felt blessed to come to the High School reunions that he sponsored at the Basha headquarters. He made sure we were well fed and had the opportunity to "catch up" with all the classmates who came and get information about those who couldn't come. He will be sorely missed. Our reunions will not be the same without him. I had the privilege of being on the Chandler H.S. football team with him. He was always supportive of the other players and certainly a good center. Blessings to his family during this time of loss. You are remembered in our prayers.

Eddie Basha helped me have a better life. You gave me one of my 1st jobs and work I did and liked it for 9 years. Store #7 on Scottsdale rd and Indian School, the cowboy store was my 1 position as carry out boy, meeting interesting people. It taught me to be punctual as well as creative. Placing seasonal decore was a joy. Winning bagging contests, store Christmas contest. I rode my bike & delivered groceries to Scottsdale High & picked oranges from arcadia districk to see in store. I taught new carry outs their duties.
Mr. Basha helped me get a job in the Scottsdale school district that last 31 years. Still living in Arcadia district I think of the wonderfule memories.
thank you Mr. Basha & God bless you and your family.

Dr. Lisa Fannin

April 5, 2013

As the praise for Eddie Basha has poured in I keep hearing of things he did for so many others similar to what he did for my father, former Governor and U. S. Senator Paul Fannin, and our family. When my mother passed away Eddie called me and said he wanted to provide the food and beverage for the reception after her funeral and he did so. He did the same thing for the reception after my father's funeral. There are so many others that he helped in this context but I will never forget what he did in connection with the funeral of former Governor Jack Williams. He used his personal airplane to fly a close friend of Governor Williams from out of state to Phoenix to attend the funeral. The friend was a former governor of another state. If that was not enough, when I was helping with seating at the funeral I asked one of the ushers to escort Eddie to one of the front rows of the church. Eddie refused politely and sat in the last row. I am almost certain that he provided the food and beverage at that funeral as well. It did not matter to Eddie that my father and Jack Williams were Republicans and Eddie was a Democrat.

As an active Republican, including serving as Chairman of the State Republican Party for three and one-half years, I observed that Eddie supported the candidates that he thought were the best for the state and not necessarily for any particular party or any special interests. As an example, when my father ran for U S Senate Eddie was a member and a leader of a campaign committee known as "Democrats for Paul Fannin for U.S Senate". When Eddie and my father were honored as "Historymakers" at a dinner sponsored by the Arizona Historical Society I spoke on behalf of my father and said how honored my father was to be receiving the award at the same time as Eddie and that he was proud of Eddie supporting him in the campaign for Senate. As an indication of how much Eddie liked my father, the next morning a beautiful copper sculpture was delivered to my office with a note from Eddie thanking me for my remarks about him the previous evening.

As Chairman of The Arizona Republican Party and in other capacities I have tried to get people involved in the political system. So often these people would turn me down. Eddie did not shy away from involvement in the political system or in support of many causes which he thought worthwhile.

He was one of a kind.

Eddie Basha commissioned a study many years ago on restoring ethics to the curriculum of Arizona schools. In the early 90's, as a state legislator, I called friends and supporters around the valley to chip in a thousand here or a thousand there to get this report out off the shelf and into action.
Eddie stopped in my office and I told him about my efforts. He looked at me, and with tears said, "Ben, you're really doing that? You should have called me. They need money? I could give them the money." Enjoy your new home, Eddie. We all miss you.

I am taller than Eddie Basha, but I always looked up to him. I got to know him in many ways, and yet not as well as many others. But I do know these things: His compassion for his fellow man and generosity is hardly matched; his heart, so big. His love for Arizona, undeniable. His focus on family, unfailing. His leadership, unparalleled. His understanding of the importance of education for our citizens and the need for reforms, unquestionable. To Nadine and the family, my heartfelt prayers, thoughts, and sincerest wishes for you to be able to bask in the glory of Eddie's memory, ergo his legacy. For all of the rest of us, Eddie is an Arizona icon we should never forget. At the Pearly Gates I know Eddie will be His designated "chubby grocer" greeter, and I look forward to hearing his greeting, "Hey, brother, how are you?" Gracias a dios para nuestro hermano. Vaya con dios, Eddie!! And tell Chapa 'Hola!"

I just heard the news today and I am saddened. One of the best starts of my school year was when Eddie Basha made an opening presentation For the Flagstaff School District. What a great proponent of education! The only thing I regret about him is that he didn't become our governor. He had the right stuff in his heart. My condolences to his family and such a loss.

Eddie Basha has been a part of my life since I can remember. My dad, Dr.C.L. Harkins was on the AZ State Board of Education with Eddie. My husband & I are members of the Cowboy Artists of America since 1978, & spent many art shows with him. We were fortunate to have him purchase several bronze sculptures & honored to have them on display at the Zelma Basha Salmeri Gallery. Our lives would never have been so richly filled with western art friends if we had not met Eddie. He had so many facets to his life, & he shared them all with the people of Arizona. We have memories of Eddies pranks & jokes he played on us & many others, that brings laughter & joy to our hearts. Though he is gone from us physically, Eddie will live on in our hearts, our minds & our lives as we pay it forward to others as he taught us to do by his graious, generous & fully lived life. Thank you God for lending Eddie Basha to all of us in Arizona for these years. See you again soon in Heaven Eddie. We can almost see you & Joe Beeler, John Clymer, Jim Reynolds, Grand Speed, Fritz White, James Boren, Johnnie Hampton & so many of the other Cowboy Artists sitting around a campfire having a drink & talking art. God's speed my friend.

Our prayers are with the Basha family. We moved to AZ 20+ years ago with three kids and very little to our name. We lived across the street from Bashas in Tempe. Eddie was always there to great us. My children were in elementary and would wait after school at Bashas for me to get off work. Eddie was my baby sitter when I couldn't afford one. My kids were safe and given a snack 2-3 days a week. The whole staff looked forward to them coming. Thank you Eddie Rest in Peace.

While I didn't personally know Eddie, I often shopped at his store in Peoria. I was so glad when he moved to the northwest valley. And while I was aware of a lot of his philanthropy, I learned so much more in the days since his death.

Eddie reminds me of the late Abe Baker, a local grocer in Omaha, NE, my hometown. Abe would often push the grocery carts of customers.

Eddie you will be sorely missed. You were a gentleman and a "mensch," the Yiddish word for good guy.

I will never forget Eddie and the Basha family. When my dad passed away 4 years ago (I was a Basha member at the time) my friend had food sent to my home for the open house after the funeral. Eddie had approved this so I wanted to thank him personally. Eddie was in the cafe at work putting together his salad at the salad bar. I walked up to him and said "Eddie, I would like to thank you for donating food for my dads funeral". His response "What darlin'?" and I told him my dad was the apple of my eye and when he passed away Bashas' was so kind to donate food. He walked away from fixing his salad and said "come, sit here". He chatted with me and in that conversation went on to say he was giving a eulogy for one of his best friends funerals. He said "Can you believe...they gave me a time limit?! Who does that?!" There are many stories I have. What a kind and generous soul. His funeral would be a month long if we could all tell our wonderful stories of him!!!! Rest in Peace Eddie. God Bless You.

Eddie was one of the greatest persons I have ever known. There were times when I served on election poll duty at another precinct than my own and it was Eddie's precinct. Eddie would come in to vote shortly after the polls opened and he always brought several dozen donuts for the poll workers. I was so proud to present him with the Copper Sword award from the Arizona Veterans Hall of Fame in 2009. Eddie always responded when my Kiwanis Club requested a donation for an event and when any of my Veterans Organizations wanted help. He was so very supportive of non profits and veterans. A free pie from all his stores for veterans on Veterans Day was sincerely appreciated. He will be deeply missed in Chandler and also our great state of Arizona. My condolences to his family and many friends.

Eddie was such a loving, giving, and caring soul. The world needs more like him! He paid it forward for so many unable to do so and left such a print on hearts. May his family find comfort from this Bible verse as you heal emotionally: " Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not gaze about, for I am your God. I wil fortify you. I will really help you. I will really keep fast hold of you with my right hand of righteousness." Isaiah 43:10

Eddie Basha was a wonderful man. He was always there whenever my grandparents needed something for the Golden Age Center in Chandler or if the Meals on wheels program needed bread for lunches. Many years ago I received a lovely note from someone congratulating me on a public article that had appeared about my work. The note was signed Fife. I couldn't understand why Fife (assuming it was Fife Symington) would send me such a nice note as I hardly knew the man who had once been our governor). After a few weeks I sent a thank you note (that seemed like the right thing to do) although I was still very puzzled. It wasn't until about a month later when I saw Eddie at an event and he asked me how Fife was. I asked him why he would ask me that. His response was "Well, didn't he send you a note?" I krealized immediately that it was Eddie who had sent it. He saw my astonished look and when I told him I set a thank you note, he doubled up with laughter. Always the practical joker. What a gentleman we have lost! RIP and thanks for caring about homeless kids!

Dear Nadine & family - what can I say? I love your family! Eddie Basha was an incredible person! I will miss him very much. I can't even imagine your incredible loss! I will always remember him with the fondest of memories. I will miss those incredible phone calls! He served Arizona and America so well. Now he is serving in another kingdom, greeting friends and family there! They are rejoicing, while we are mourning! Love to you all. Dr. Kay Dean

A major brick in the foundation of Arizona business has left his love behind. His committment to his customers and our community, his humility, his kindness, his philanthropy sets a very high standard that not many can reach. God Bless and keep you Eddie and prayers for strength to the Basha family.

May the Basha family find peace in knowing Eddie is now in a great place. He was such a wonderful man and so kind. My parents met him while they were alive and enjoyed his presence. God Bless.
