Birnbaum, Gary
Gary Birnbaum, 64, was born April 29, 1952 in the Bronx, N.Y. to Sylvia and Sidney Birnbaum. He graduated from Marin Van Buren High School in Queens, N.Y. He continued his education at Harpur College, part of SUNY Binghamton, where he met his wife, Denise Frank, in the chemistry lab. Gary graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1973, the same year he and Denise got married in Rye, N.Y. They began their journey west to Indiana University Law School where he became Article Editor of the Indiana Law Journal. Gary graduated law school Magna Cum Laude and a member of the Order of the COIF. They moved to Phoenix for Gary to work at Streich Lang Law Firm in 1976. He moved on to work at Mariscal, Weeks, McIntyre, and Friedlander where he built a nine person law firm into a sixty person law firm. Recently, Gary managed their merger with the national law firm, Dickinson Wright of Detroit. Gary also took great joy in teaching up and coming lawyers at Arizona State University Law School. He mentored and taught there for the last fifteen years and was currently teaching a class on Private Property Rights. Gary received legal accolades too numerous to mention including Lawyer of the Year and Best Lawyer to Bet Your Firm On. He leaves behind his wife of 43 years, Denise, his brother Rick Birnbaum (Lisa) of Calabasas, CA, and his mother, Sylvia Nemiroff of West Hill, CA. Gary was very close to his nephews Brian, Kevin, Jared, and Shaun (Cianna) and a spoiled cat named Newton. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and the Phoenix legal community. Services will be held Friday, November 4, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. at Sinai Mortuary Chapel, 4538 N. 16th St. Phoenix, AZ 85016. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Birnbaum Family Fellowship In Memory of Professor Gary Birnbaum at Arizona State University. P.O. Box 2260 Tempe, AZ 85280-2260

When I got to know Gary through a case we handled together for different clients, he was a respected partner at a large law firm and I was a junior associate at a small firm. Despite this difference, Gary stood out to me as incredibly gracious and kind to a younger colleague such as myself. The fact that he enjoyed teaching law students is not surprising at all. He was a tough litigator simultaneous to being a complete gentleman--which is a difficult and rare combination of qualities for lawyers to have at the same time. To his family and loved ones, please accept my belated but deep condolences on his loss.

Rest in peace dear Gary. I just read about your death and was so sad. Thank you so much for all the years of hard negotiations you did to help our town of Cave Creek, especially helping to put together the deal that got us Spur Cross Conservation Area. Each and every time we hike that preserve, I think of you and others who made it possible. Rest in God's arms always, Anna Marsolo, Cave Creek,Az.
