I just discovered the passing of dear Ms Bock--my inspiration to become an educator. She was a challenging, dynamic, and compassionate teacher whose passion for great literature and good writing was tremendously motivating and contagious. What an incredible teacher and life friend! I miss our occasional lunch or dinner and her sage advice, insights, and wonderful handwritten notes. I consider her one of the ten most influential people in my life and thank her for caring for her subject and her students as she did.

Miss Bock was such a positive influence to the lives of so many students over her more than three decades of teaching. Our NPHS Class of 1960 invited Miss Bock to our 50 year reunion held in Scottsdale in Sept. 2010. When I called to invite her I was amazed at her recall of the names of so many former students. I found a nice photo of Miss Bock from our reunion album. She is shown here standing with a former student Kathy (Young) Booth

A Starry Gem. I am so grateful to have her for English Lit, and as a friend. Every piece I have written correctly that has any value I owe to her.

This remarkable teacher will live on in our memories forever. How lucky we were to have her teaching at North High for so many years. She was the best.

I last saw Miss Bock at the 50th reunion of the NPHS Class of '61. Classmates greeted her with enthusiasm and appreciation. Was she everyone's favorite teacher or did it just seem that way? Over the years many had kept in touch. She LOVED knowing who was up to what. We were lucky to have had such high quality teachers at North & she was one of the best. Thank you, Miss Bock, for preparing us for college and for continuing to care long after graduation.

I am grateful and honored to count myself as one of Miss Bock's former students. I had the opportunity to see her and talk to her several times after graduation. When I finished reading her obituary, I could only think, "What a life." I can honestly say that her encouragement played a significant role in my pursuit of higher education. My friend, Bryan Reed, and I were in awe of her intellect and mesmerized by her memory for, and ability to quote at length from a litany of notable works. She introduced me to John Keats, and in the way only an adolescent girl can, I fell in love with him. Miss Bock, dear Miss Bock, rest in peace.

Gretchen Bock was my AP Enlgish lit teacher at North in the 1960's. She was demanding but fair, and expected students to give their best. I had several wonderful English teachers over the years, but she was at the top. Her legacy is in the students whose reading and writing she shaped.

Gretchen Bock holds a special corner in my heart as being both a teacher and a steadying influence on this less than stellar pupil. God Bless. Respectfully. John Schuh North High 1958

Ms. Bock was the perfect balance of tough, inspiration and compassion as a teacher. I will hold a place in my heart for her forever. Ms. Bock touched so many. My thoughts and prayers go to her family.

I always fondly remember Gretchen as a great teacher and friend. In recent years I made a point of taking Gretchen to lunch and once for dinner.

Several years ago I took Gretchen to lunch at the Royal Palms in Phoenix and while we were eating an old classmate and friend Bob Diamond came up to our table and we had a fun reunion. Gretchen believed I had set it up and would not listen to me when I explained it was just happen stance.
