Dr. Howard Mitchell Shumate went to be with his loving Lord on August 6, 2016 at the age of 89. He was born in Marion, Ohio to Mitchell H. Shumate and Opal (Burley) Shumate. He is preceded in death by his parents and a loving sister Verdella Cowel. He is survived by an adoring family consisting of Ruth Shumate, his wife of 54 years, a daughter Diana Manak, a son William Hughes, sisters Marlene Remmy and Linda Leving, 7 grandchildren, 11 greatgrandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Howard served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Upon his return he formed a western band with his uncles and some friends called "the Chuck Wagon Pals". They played at dances, fairs and had a weekly radio show. Howard was an accomplished musician and played the accordion, guitar, banjo, piano and organ. In 1952 he accepted Jesus as his personal savior and his whole life changed. He graduated from Cedarville Bible College where he was very involved in "Youth for Christ" he pastored and built a church in Ohio. He graduated from Ohio State University and taught at Marion Harding High School. In 1961 he married Ruth and moved to Arizona where he took a job as a guidance counselor at North High School. He then graduated from Arizona State University with his master's degree and then a doctorate degree in educational Psychology. He held several different positions with the Phoenix Union School District and retired from the district administration in 1995. Howard was instrumental in the founding of Legacy Ministries International and the "Museum of the Word" Bible museum currently located at Azusa Pacific University near Los Angeles, Ca. A visitation will be held from 9:00 - 10:30 AM, Thursday , August 18, 2016 followed by a Funeral Service at 10:30 AM at Palmcroft Church, 15835 N. 35th ave Phx, AZ . Military Honors and flag presentation will begin at 12:30 PM at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road, Phx, AZ.
