Dear Connie and Stein Family,

I apologize for not being present to provide my support for you and the family during the loss of John, but I've been at home for the last two months dealing with my own medical issues and I just saw John's memorial page in the Arizona Trooper magazine.

John was such a great guy to work with and for in the Duty Office (D.O.) at DPS. John always wanted his subordinates to feel like we were working together as a family and team, and not working for him as the Supervisor. It never felt like work with John in charge. John was one of the tops of Sergeants that I had worked under and he always made the work day a fun one beginning with the smiles he came to work with in the morning. Then the day continued with the jokes and laughter he engaged in throughout the day.

Prior to the D.O. I had plenty of opportunities working with John covering "The Ditch". He was the Sergeant for the other squad and whenever John arrived on a bad scene, as a back-up, or just meeting up with you to say hi, I always drove away laughing my butt off and a few times I almost caused me to wreck my patrol vehicle. John's idea of work was that it should always be fun.

John was extremely supportive and inspirational and no matter what happened during the day John ensured that we knew he always had our back. As you and others know working in the D.O. was typically never the favorite place among folks at DPS, because we typically woke folks up and it usually followed with bad news, but John turned that all around when he took on the assignment. Because of John the D.O. had a face lift and became the place to be in a career and for the first time ever we were recognized for a Directors Unit Citation Award and took the lead in the state for the AMBER Alert program.

John was instrumental in me becoming a Sergeant at DPS by quizzing me on the knowledge I needed to know for the written test and preparing me for the QAB. It was difficult moving on and away once I was promoted, but I always knew he was a phone call away and I took him up on the offer a few times when I needed mentoring.

I, as well as my past peers that worked in the D.O. loved the squad get together nights at the dog track and I'm sure all would agree that we surely miss those days. I still look at the group photographs from time to time and find myself saying, "Boy those were good days."

John loved you dearly and always talked about you and the kids all the time, so please know that though he had a lot on his plate at work, you and the kids (as he called them) were always #1 on his mind. He was a very proud father and you were all extremely loved by John.

Please share my wife Connie and my condolences to the family and know we are thinking and praying for you, the kids and family.
