I was going thru a leather case that belonged to my Grandfather. In it was a note "Made by Silvestre Herrera 1955 or 1956. Medal of Honor. On the outside of the case was my Grandfather's name. Henry S. Stevens. Do you know their relationship? I am a vet myself and the history of these two is important. thank you and I am very sorry for your loss and the loss of an American Hero.

My prayers and condolences go out to the Herrera family. Although I did not know Silvestre, he was a brother and fellow veteran. Are country was made by hero's like you. My we all strive to be like Silvestre who gave his all when our country called upon him to serve. May you now serve GOD in his kingdom. A job well done my brother.

Syl, Bobby, and other family members:
“The Quiet Warrior” has become whole again and is with your mother. His memories will always be with all of you.

As a child, I had the honor of meeting your father and learning of his deeds from my father, Manuel F. Rios. I remember going to your home on 43rd Avenue at various times with my father to fix your T.V., after which, our fathers would sit, talk of days past, all over a cold beer!

As I got older and followed Syl in high school and having Bobby a year behind me, I learned more about your father. I then realized the impact he had on the lives of many people. As the years passed and I returned to Phoenix, I would see your father at Post 41. As an adult, I reintroduced myself to him and we spoke of his and my father’s relationship. Later on, whenever I would see him, he would greet me with, “Aren’t you’re Manuel’s boy?”

I purchased a DVD entitled, Hispanic Medal of Honor Winners,” in which Sil appears with your father during an interview. As a substitute teacher in the west valley, I use it from time to time to introduce your dad to the young students. In doing so, many young Hispanics and non-Hispanics learn of his heroism. Your father has been and continues to be an inspiration to me, an inspiration that I have shared and continue to share with those who knew nothing of him.

With much remorse, I did not learn of his passing until today. The Lord allowed you to have him through his 91st birthday. He will always be with each and every one of you, as you are a part of a selfish less, considerate, inconspicuous giant, who loved you more than you could ever fathom!

We are so thankful for the patriotic stance you instilled in all of us. Your heroism and humble life is the legacy you leave all your children. You are a testimonial of a true American. Our heavenly father took the hand of a gentleman and a soldier home. God bless us and our soldiers, we continue to be a strong nation because through you we are stronger than our enemies.

Farewell my brother. Heaven is more complete with you there. Keep those gates open for when we arrive. We will fight on forever.
