You are truly an inspiration and a mentor to the thousands of children that have attended and graduated from Silvestre Herrera Elementary School over the years and have gone on to be successful and productive individuals. I am very proud to be one of those graduates (1972) from the barrio where the school is situated. God Bless you and your Family.

Mr. Herrera, I remember as a student at Lowell School in 1964 when I checked out a library book and discovered Mexican American WW II soldiers honored for valor and bravery and I discovered a true patriot Silvestre Herrera. I recall the first time I met you and shook your hand it was like a blessing. I remember being in the US Army over seas wanting to serve as you did with honor and pride as a Mexican American US soldier defending the United States of America. I recall all the years that you served as the Grand Marshall for the Veterans Day parade we have in Phoenix, always instilling pride in our community. seeing And talking to you recently on October 6, 2007 at the Biltmore Resort for the luncheon honoring all Veterans. That you always honored the Veterans at Post 41 with your presence. When you arrived and came through the door people would instincly rise and acknowledge your greatness with the utmost respect. That you have been a great leader and role model and example to our youth, all Veterans, and all Americans. May eternal God, the supreme commander of us all welcome you with open arms.

Circumstances do not make a man, they reveal what he is made of. Your circumstances revealed a hero for all to remember and be proud of. Thank you for your sacrifice.
